To celebrate the season, Canadian design duo Kirk Pickersgrill and Stephen Wong, aka Greta Constantine held their “Midsummer Party” in a private home in Toronto last Thursday. The event was well-attended by the city’s style crowd, including PR mavens, bloggers, celebrities and more. The party featured cocktails made with Stoli as well as delicious hors d’oeuvres including sliders and mini grilled cheese sandwiches catered bySeventh Heaven Event Catering. Purdy’s Chocolate was also there, making ice cream bars for guests. The amusement park style ice cream on a stick was dipped in either white or dark chocolate (or double both) and then rolled in coloured sprinkles or almonds (or again, both). I have to admit that I went for all of the above, and yes, it brought back many childhood memories of summers at the Ex. Attendees also got a tiny sneak preview (consisting of a model wearing a long, white flowy dress) to the duo’s Spring/Summer 2013 season, which will be presented in full later in the year.
While the event was, for the most part, a mix-and-mingle party, the highlight of the evening was definitely the synchronized swimmers who walked out to the pool wearing white, vintage style suits (very modest and with skirts), all created by the Greta Constantine team, and carrying white parasols before diving in. The routine they performed was to Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl”, an interesting choice of music, considering the look of the suits. It would actually have made a bit more sense for them to a Katy Perry song if they were to stick with something more contemporary. I’m sure the other guests were as surprised as I was – perhaps expecting classical music or something mid-20th century. But this is a fashion-related event, and fashion is often full of surprises.
