Recently, I had the wonderful chance to speak with Maude Arsenault, an art photographer and creator of The Print Atelier, an online source for art photography. Based in Montreal, the site allows shoppers to purchase prints by photographers without having the need to attend a show or step into a gallery, making them more accessible to people across the globe. The photos available are not just any picture, but artistic pieces of work in print, each targeting photography collectors. In fact, in each photograph seen on the web, there is a disclaimer that says: Photographs have been chosen for their content, artistic vision and technical excellence. All prints are Digital Pigment Prints using the latest top of the line technology, archival high dynamic inks and 200 years old life paper.

Currently, the site consists of works by Ms. Arsenault herself as well other artists such as Daniel Shipp, Julie Artacho and Le Pigeon (Jeremy Pigeon). Most are available in more than one size, with a decrease in editions in larger sizes. Each photo is a limited edition – once they’re gone, they’re gone – and The Print Atelier holds exclusive selling rights. In other words, photographers cannot sell their works on their own sites, but can, of course, have shows and refer buyers to The Print Atelier.

Though currently, works found at The Print Atelier are mostly those by people who have connections with Ms. Arsenault. However, Ms. Arsenault and her team are actively recruiting artists from around the world, so who knows who we’ll see on the site in the future?
