Like many women, I have way too many lip glosses/lipsticks/lip balms. But then again, like many women, I also have more than one bag, and it’s just convenient to have “too many” lip colours so I would always have something in a bag. Thus, when Maybelline New York’s Canadian PR company sent me an email about their Winter 2016 collection of Baby Lips, I rushed out and purchased two colours (the email specifically noted that there were no samples for us to try. I don’t mind. It’s not like Baby Lips costs an arm and a leg).
This season’s collection comes in four shades: Sprinkled Pink, Cocoa Crush, Mint Please and Spice It Up. I purchased Cocoa Crush, which is brown-based and Spice it Up, a reddish tone that is similar in colour to the cinnamon hearts one gets around Valentine’s Day. I’ve tried both shades, both on make-up and non-make-up days and to me, it works well in either case. I don’t wear much to begin with on a regular, every day basis (I don’t “get” the over-the-top looks some fashion/beauty blogger types wear during the day. Ladies, you aren’t heading to the club!), likely influenced by my days at BSS where no “noticeable colours” were allowed (and to those who find this “oppressive,” well, you aren’t from this type of school). I found that the lip balm works in either case. Of course, if you’re going out, then it’s probably better to wear regular lipstick unless you’re looking for a barely-there lip. But that’s the case with any shade of Baby Lips. It’s more of a day/office look.
Out of the two, I prefer Cocoa Crush for a no make-up face (or if you’re only doing primer and mascara), while Spice It Up is better if you’re wearing a bit more. I found that for me, at least, the latter had slightly more colour. Perhaps it is because Cocoa Crush is more brown based, while Spice It Up is red. However, Spice It Up did smear a little on me. Maybe it was just the tube I purchased.
The Winter 2016 collection is available at most drugstores and larger supermarkets or wherever you buy your favourite Maybelline products. Price may vary depending on region/store.
