French designer Barbara Bui was on hand at The Bay, Queen Street on Thursday discussing her line with Canadian fashion personality, Jeanne Beker.  Guests were treated to delicious appetizers prior to the discussion and were entertained by a DJ.  The event was held at The Room.

Ms. Bui’s namesake line launched in the 1980s – not exactly an era the fashion industry wants to remember.  This was the time where the “powerwoman” – harsh looks with big, linebacker shoulder pads and big hair (thank goodness I wasn’t old enough to dress like that.) However, Ms. Bui wanted something different.  Rather than going with the flow, she went for simplicity – a “cool, sexy, natural” look that carries on to this day. The pieces currently available have a certain funkiness to them, yet they are understated.

After the interview, many attendees had the chance to speak with Ms. Bui, some taking pictures, and others asking questions.  Though the Barbara Bui line is cut for the more “ideal” tall fashion shape, according to the designer, who is very petite herself, pieces can be hemmed without losing its shape/general design. Also, many of her miniskirts would look absolutely ridiculous on tall women outside of the runway.  From plain, black jackets to embellished heels to fringy miniskirts and Ms. Bui’s favourite, leather trousers, the styles are feminine, fun and at the same time, something a little “different” from what might typically be seen. The good thing is that there’s something for everyone!
