BCBGMaxAzria Goes Grunge for Fall 2013

BCBGMaxAzria is heading back to the early 90s with the Fall/Winter 2013 collection.  Long loose tunics and dresses, accompanied with skinny jeans and sloppy styles gives off a grungy vibe, though definitely more updated.  The look is a little neater, more hipster, but definitely not for everyone.  Colour-wise, there is an emphasis once again, on “oxblood”/burgundies and, of course, blacks.  There were also some blues and “winter whites.”  In terms of print, the collection includes zebra, florals as well as one very strange coat that looked like a multi-coloured cow.  Overall, the more slimming looks were far better than the layers.

As I’ve noted time and time again, it’s very interesting how BCBGMaxAzria’s runway look contrasts from the “everyday” styles in the boutiques.  The former has mostly been very geometric and definitely not something that would be flattering on most body types while the latter is, for the lack of a better term, more “regular wear” with pieces that work well on more people (though lately, BCBG seems to cater to those who want more figure-flattering pieces with many body-conscious dresses like its “big sister,” Hervé Leger.

As usual, I would have to say unlike, say, Tory Burch or Nanette Lepore, BCBGMaxAzria’s runway looks are more inspirational – tunics and skinny tops, paired with ski hats (aka “touques” in Canadian) can easily be restyled to suit an individual’s shape.  However, not everyone is necessarily creative enough to come up with these ideas.  So while BCBGMaxAzria did put on a good show, seeing the looks on the models, who for the most part are not shaped like the majority, doesn’t help.  Besides, some of the bulkier looks are overwhelming on these nearly 6′, probably 110 lb girls.  Imagine that on someone 5’5″ and 130.  This is something that this line does all the time – something I’d never get.
