The Cabinet, a hair salon which opened a few years ago in the King and Bathurst area, recently added a spa on the upper level. Already known for its Gilded Age aesthetic, the new services only extend the vibe, offering both massage and “five star treatment” services for head, hands and feet in addition to standard hair services at the salon level. The spa has more of a “home” feel to it (and it makes sense, considering that the spa was the banker’s apartment in the past), giving it a more relaxed atmosphere, and a reflection of founders Alex MacDonald and Emma Rose’s personalities. In addition, the entire concept, including the name was supposed to give it a cozier sort of vibe – “cabinet” was another name for “salon” or “drawing room” – the main “gathering” room of a Gilded Age home.
Walking through both the salon and spa, one can’t help feel that he or she has gone back in time. In fact, Emma indicated that the entire place was like a time capsule. It’s actually interesting to note that certain parts of the flooring in the spa level have prints of old, faded newspapers. And with big windows in the waiting area of the spa as well as the hood space in the salon level definitely makes The Cabinet much cozier than its competitors. It’s definitely a dream for anyone in love with the period. Only one doesn’t have to deal with those restrictive corsets!
The Cabinet is located on577 Queen Street West (Queen and Portland). Its hours are Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 AM to 8PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 5PM. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
