Creative food is something we hear more often these days. In some cases certain individuals are truly able to take that term to another level. Ottawa based Erica Stanisci is the talented and inventive owner of Butter Cream Dream an out of home business which focuses on custom deserts such as cookies, cupcakes, cakes and mini cupcake bites (those will be explained later). Stanisci’s background is in visual art, something she enjoys tremendously and she admits she’s “always been a creative person” and “has a sweet tooth.”
One day as if fate had planned it “I got this book called Hello Cup Cake, I started playing around, it was just fun at first.” She explained that “friends liked everything so much that it kind of snow balled from there”. Within a few months Stanisci started taking it more seriously and really started pursuing this on a more professional level. Her persistence was quickly paying off “orders just started coming in,” with orders coming in though pressure was being added. “It’s definitely a constant learning process, each customers request is different from one another.”
Regarding the learning process and still being new to this business, when asked if there were orders she had to turn down Stanisci replied “I had to refuse one wedding cake, it was too many layers, I don’t want to say yes to something I know I can’t 100% do”. Stanisci added that her most challenging order to date was “an order of 220 cupcakes for a wedding, 9 different flavours, some had to be vegan; some had to be gluten-free.” Also “the cupcakes” Stanisci says “are the most popular order.” Though her Mini Cupcake Bites could be considered her most unique, truffles that appear as little mini cupcakes will throw your taste buds for a really delicious loop if you don’t know before hand.
With all these different types of orders for events that range from weddings, wedding/baby showers, children’s parties and more one would which is Staniscis favourite to create for. “Children’s parties are the best,” Stanisci says happily “they are colourful and playful, not to mention hearing the comments at the parties when you present the finished work.”
Now not only is Stanisci very talented in creating eye catching goodies, she is also putting this talent to good use. Stanisci has been working with various animal charities, “I’ve been working with the Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa donating 70 boxes of truffles,” additionally she “made Baileys truffles for take the plunge” amongst many others. Stanisci says that it’s “very rewarding” as she is “a big animal lover.”
For the future Stanisci says she would “love to have a proper store front some day” and would “love to do more and bigger events”. Regarding how food and fashion often get mixed in together “at the height of fashion and food, they both cycle and they both have the ability to create”. That being said to a lot of us that is one of the greatest abilities of all!
