The last time we talked with Amy Shackleton she was at a point where her paintings were the combination of brush work and using gravity manipulation. Now Shackleton is going completely brush free!
Wanting to showcase her new methods, Shackleton created a time lapse video (above) that garnered a massive 900,000+ hits response on YouTube. We decided to catch up with the constantly rising artist to see (do we even need to ask) how things are going.
What galleries do you currently show in?:
I’m currently represented by The Elaine Fleck Gallery (Toronto), the Gerry Thomas Gallery (Calgary) and Degree Art Gallery (London, England)
What made you decide to do the time-lapse video?:
I created the video to accompany my September solo exhibition at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto. The majority of people couldn’t wrap there heads around how I can create straight lines, controlled curves and concrete buildings with gravity. So I created the time-lapse video to help clarify my process and reveal my brush less technique.
What was your reaction to the response of the video?:
In a word, shocked. I thought a few people might find the video interesting, but over 900, 000? I never expected such a global response. It’s great to know there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who appreciate my unique process, love what I’m doing and wish they could view my paintings in person.
How do you feel this progression is important for your work?:
The video has gained me international exposure over the internet. Thousands of people were e-mailing me, tweeting about me, joining my mailing list, and subscribing to my You Tube channel. I appeared on the Huffington Post, New York Magazine, CBC and CBS, Gizmodo, My Modern Met and Oddity Central. I sold paintings and made connections with people I wouldn’t normally be able to reach. And above all, it’s refreshing to realize that maybe I discovered something unique, something that no one has ever done before.
