Held at their home, The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the evening featured delicious food courtesy of 10ation Event Catering and The Cheese Boutique (they’ve been providing delicious charcuterie and cheese spreads at many of the COC’s events I’ve been to), of course, entertainment from the COC’s Ensemble Studio. Fine wines were NOT the only items being auctioned off. The silent auction also included photo sessions (a great way to update that LinkedIn profile pic!), cookbooks as well as date night events such as a gift certificate to Volos. Proceeds for the event go towards the COC’s outreach programs, which help approximately 50,000 people of all ages gain better access to the arts.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="26106" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/canadian-opera-company-wine-auction/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?fit=540%2C396&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,396" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 7 Plus","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1491506393","copyright":"","focal_length":"3.99","iso":"100","shutter_speed":"0.14285714285714","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="finewineauction17 cheesecharcuterie2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?fit=300%2C220&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?fit=540%2C396&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26106" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?resize=540%2C396" alt="" width="540" height="396" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?w=540&ssl=1 540w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?resize=150%2C110&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-cheesecharcuterie2.jpg?resize=300%2C220&ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

People serving themselves at the cheese and charcuterie table

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="26104" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/canadian-opera-company-wine-auction/fine-wine-auction17-silent1/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Fine-Wine-Auction17-silent1-e1491602345299.jpg?fit=540%2C405&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,405" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 7 Plus","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1491512277","copyright":"","focal_length":"3.99","iso":"125","shutter_speed":"0.25","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Fine Wine Auction17 silent1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Fine-Wine-Auction17-silent1-e1491602345299.jpg?fit=300%2C225&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Fine-Wine-Auction17-silent1-e1491602345299.jpg?fit=540%2C405&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26104" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Fine-Wine-Auction17-silent1.jpg?resize=540%2C405" alt="" width="540" height="405" data-recalc-dims="1" />

Wine at the silent auction

The event started with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the lobby of the Four Seasons Centre, where people roamed around, bidding on the various items while nibbling on the goodies. Hors d’oeuvres included short rib sliders, mini lobster grilled cheese, grilled feta and vegetable skewers as well as a hot food station serving braised duck and cod (I only had the cod and did not think it was nearly as good as the hors d’oeuvres or the cheese/charcuterie. Wines of all kinds, ranging from vintages as old as 60+ years to more recent bottles from this century. The most recent bottles or magnums (1500 mL) were from 2010 (for the live auction, anyway. The silent auction featured more recent wines, including ones which are still available for a reasonable price at the liquor store). I loved how the auctioneer, as they often do, made funny comments about certain bottles – including one from 1985. He noted that some of the attendees might not have existed (as in being born) yet and may be interested in bidding on “prebirth wine.” This is very true – there were most definitely people who were under 32!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="26109" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/canadian-opera-company-wine-auction/finewineauction17-mac/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?fit=540%2C405&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,405" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 7 Plus","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1491501503","copyright":"","focal_length":"3.99","iso":"100","shutter_speed":"0.066666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Finewineauction17 mac" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?fit=300%2C225&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?fit=540%2C405&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26109" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?resize=540%2C405" alt="" width="540" height="405" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?w=540&ssl=1 540w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?resize=150%2C113&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Finewineauction17-mac.jpg?resize=300%2C225&ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

A non-wine item from the silent auction (no, I did not bid on this – I have ENOUGH makeup as is!)

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="26120" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/canadian-opera-company-wine-auction/finewineauction17-fetaskewer/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?fit=540%2C387&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,387" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 7 Plus","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1491501900","copyright":"","focal_length":"3.99","iso":"40","shutter_speed":"0.058823529411765","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="finewineauction17 fetaskewer" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?fit=300%2C215&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?fit=540%2C387&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26120" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?resize=540%2C387" alt="" width="540" height="387" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?w=540&ssl=1 540w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?resize=150%2C108&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/finewineauction17-fetaskewer.jpg?resize=300%2C215&ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

Grilled feta and vegetable skewer

I had an amazing time and will try to make it out again in 2018 if I do not have a conflict (I was invited to two other events that very evening). I’m trying to up my wine collection, especially with bottles from years which have a special meaning to me (namely, my birth year and the year I married). I also feel that, with government cuts, it is extremely important to ensure music and culture are available to as many people as possible. I may have spent my childhood and youth taking piano and voice lessons, but many kids are not as fortunate. Since music and the rest of the arts are an important part of enhancing one’s life – and especially so for children – we need to be able to make it as widely available as possible.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">26095</post-id>

Royal Conservatory of Music Gala with Lang Lang

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

Arts, Entertainment & Culture

Music

annual galas

arts

Classical Music

culture

Debussy

galas

Lang Lang

Lizst

music

performances

philanthropy

Royal Conservatory of Music

Toronto

Wow, what an experience! Since there was a post-performance sweets reception, dessert was smaller – a tower consisting of chocolate mousse in shot glasses and bite-sized lemon squares (I liked the squares much more than the mousse, personally).

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="25579" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/royal-conservatory-of-music-gala-with-lang-lang/lang-lang-dinner-3/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?fit=540%2C369&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,369" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="lang-lang-dinner" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?fit=300%2C205&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?fit=540%2C369&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25579" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?resize=540%2C369" alt="lang-lang-dinner" width="540" height="369" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?w=540&ssl=1 540w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?resize=150%2C103&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?resize=300%2C205&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Lang-Lang-Dinner-2.jpeg?resize=65%2C45&ssl=1 65w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

Our three course dinner

The performance was about two hours, including an intermission. Our seats were excellent, on the second row and pretty much centre – probably better than the actual FRONT row. During the first half, Lang Lang played two pieces: Claude Debussy’s Ballade Salve and the half hour long Piano Sonata in B Minor (S. 178) by Liszt while the second half consisted of several Spanish composers. Lang Lang, as with many musicians, was very passionate while performing. There’s no mechanical play here. You can tell this is something he loves to do. In addition to the performance, Lang Lang was also presented with an honorary honorary fellowship to the Royal Conservatory for his philanthropic and mentorship work through the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. The program uses the Conservatory’s curriculum for their Keys of Inspiration, a public school program which introduces and trains kids in needy neighbourhoods in classical music, thereby improving their lives – similar to the El Sistema.

Of course, a performance from someone like Lang Lang is not complete without encores. Lang Lang played three pieces before the concert officially ended, including one piece by a Chinese composer. He received many standing ovations, and one member of the audience even even made the “I’m not worthy” gesture at the end.

This was both my mother’s and my first time seeing Lang Lang live. While I do not own any of his recordings, I have heard some either at other people’s homes/cars or through streaming services. I have, however, never explored much of his work. This will be changing. While I have yet to purchase anything, I just heard parts his latest recording, New York Rhapsody, which consists of New York-themed pieces by various American composers like Aaron Copland and the Gershwins. It is very interesting to hear him perform pop, jazz and Broadway, considering he is more well-known for classical piano. While it probably isn’t the best out of his records – he isn’t the only artist and can be overshadowed (if Lang Lang CAN be overshadowed) by vocalists – it is probably the best one to start with if you are not much of a classical music fan. I guarantee you’ll be transformed.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">25563</post-id>

The Magic Flute and Louis Riel Among Canadian Opera Company’s 2016-17 Season

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

Arts, Entertainment & Culture

Music

Canada 150

Canadian culture

Canadian history

Canadian Opera Company 2016-2017 season

COC

Louis Riel

Metis

Mozart

Norma

Richard Wagner

Ring Cycle

The Canadian Opera Company

Wagner

Mozart’s kid-friendly opera, The Magic Flute will be one of several productions in the Canadian Opera Company’s (COC) upcoming season. The opera, a fairy tale, is a love story featuring magic (the flute and a set of bells), rescuing a princess (as well as kidnapping a prince) as well as evil (the Queen of the Night, which sort of reminds me of Ursula in The Little Mermaid). And unlike most operas from the late 18th century, The Magic Flute is performed in German, rather than Italian and features some spoken dialogue.

Full 12+ minute trailer of the COC’s 2016-2017 season

Another opera to highlight is Louis Riel, an opera about a Canadian historical figure of Métis descent (First Nations and European) and rebel who was executed in 1885. This is particularly important not only because of the recent attention media have made regarding injustices towards Canada’s First Nations groups but also because 2017 marks 150 years of Confederation for our country. In fact, this opera was first performed in 1967, for our centennial. I think we, as a culture, are a little bit too modest and tend not to highlight or celebrate our own works and historical figures. Sometimes, we see this as being a little bit too nationalistic (though we don’t seem to care when we win medals in hockey…or celebrate Canada Day). This, I believe, needs to change. It doesn’t make us “tacky” or “rude.”

Other operas slated for the COC include: Norma, Tosca and the finale to Wagner’s Ring Cycle, Götterdämmerung.

Are you going to see any of the productions? Which ones? And if you can’t make it to Toronto next year, are there any productions you wish to see? Or have seen either in your hometown or elsewhere (including television/streaming)?

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">24580</post-id>

Toronto Soprano Wins the COC’s Centre Stage 2015

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

Arts, Entertainment & Culture

Music

Bruno Roy

Canadian musicians

Canadian Opera Company

Centre Stage 2015

COC

competition

Emily D’Angelo

Ensemble Studio

Lauren Eberwein

music

Opera

singers

Home-grown soprano, Emily D’Angelo not only takes home the grand prize of $5,000, but was also picked as the audience’s choice winner (last year’s winner, Charles Sy was also picked by the audience), worth $1,500. And while I agree with Ms. Arquette that equal pay for equal work (even if the definition of “equal work” is highly debatable) is extremely important, I find it difficult to understand why she had to make that point during her acceptance speech. I did not find much relevance between salary and her role as the mother in Boyhood. I have seen the movie and neither the main nor the subplot had anything to do with a woman wanting equal pay. Rather, Ms. Arquette’s character was abused by two out of three of her husbands. If Ms. Arquette wanted to discuss women’s issues, then she should have noted BRIEFLY that we need to properly discuss domestic violence. How come I’m not seeing too many people bring THAT up online? Why just agreeing with her and not noting that her speech might have been a bit out of place for an awards show? Or are people just not using their heads and jumping on the bandwagon because, well, it’s an important topic, period?

Lady Gaga and The Sound of Music:

Entertainment Tonight on Lady Gaga’s performance

On a different note (no pun intended), I still can’t get over Lady Gaga’s performance at the Oscar’s tribute to The Sound of Music. It was just so…different from what she typically does. When I first saw her come on stage, I was thinking “goodness, what will she ruin tonight?” Instead, I was surprised. Not only did she NOT Gaga-ize any of the music, but she sounded great AND sang in a style that was appropriate for the tribute. I know that some people have criticized her (fake) accent, but I did NOT find anything wrong with it. In fact, that kind of pronunciation was how I was taught to sing. I sang in choirs and took private voice lessons as a teen and in my early 20s and was always told to sound a bit more “British” (I guess in reality, it would be mid-Atlantic – sort of a mix of traditional BBC and North American broadcaster English) for most songs in English. Of course, if we were singing something from, say, Oklahoma!, then it’s a different story!

Best Picture:

I am GLAD that Birdman won. Sorry, but as I said in an earlier post, the only thing interesting about Boyhood was that it took a LONG TIME to film. Other than that, it was boooooorrrrrrrrriiiiinnnnng. If my parents bothered to videotape me between six and 18 and archiving it, I could just watch that. Thank you.

Image credit: Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com (Patricia Arquette)

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">22682</post-id>

Canadian Opera Company’s 2015-2016 Season to Feature Pyramus and Thisbe

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

Arts, Entertainment & Culture

Music

arts

Canadian Opera Company

Canadian Opera Company 2015-2016 season

carmen

La traviata

music

Opera

performing arts

Pyramus and Thisbe

Toronto

As a member of the Canadian Opera Company‘s (COC) Ensemble Circle, I had the opportunity to attend last night’s announcement of the COC’s upcoming season. I have to admit that I am very excited. Many old favourites are back, as are new productions, including Pyramus and Thisbe, an opera by Canadian composer Barbara Monk Feldman with some music by early Baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi (seen by many as the “Father of Opera”). The opera itself was inspired by a painting from Monteverdi’s era.

COC on Pyramus and Thisbe

Like most people, I first came across Pyramus and Thisbe in school, when I read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. However, this version is NOT going to at all come close to the satirical play-within-a-play seen in the story. Instead, it is going to be “serious” as they said in the presentation, and therefore, “tragic.” In fact, the story inspired Shakespeare to write another high school favourite, Romeo and Juliet. Since Pyramus and Thisbe is going to open the season, I wonder if a mythological theme will be part of Operanation 2015!

Of course, Pyramus and Thisbe is NOT the only opera I’m looking forward to seeing. I am also looking forward to others, including Carmen (the closing show), La traviata and The Marriage of Figaro (for anyone looking for a comedy). Sigfried and Maometto II round up the six operas for the 2016 season.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">22438</post-id>

Charles Sy Captures Hearts of Audience and Jury

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

Arts, Entertainment & Culture

Events

Music

Aaron Sheppard

Canadian Opera Company

Centre Stage

Centre Stage 2014

Charles Sy

David Lee

Dimitri Katoakis

Ensemble Studio

music

Nota Bene

This year’s Centre Stage competition, which was held this past Tuesday at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts was another great success, with tenor Charles Sy winning both first place and the audiences’ choice award, making his prize worth a grand total of $6,500 ($5,000 for first place and another $1,500 for the […]

This year’s Centre Stage competition, which was held this past Tuesday at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts was another great success, with tenor Charles Sy winning both first place and the audiences’ choice award, making his prize worth a grand total of $6,500 ($5,000 for first place and another $1,500 for the audience choice). His performances of “Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön” from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Una furtiva lagrima from L’elisir d’amore) by Gaetano Donizetti were near flawless. The runner up and second runner up of the competition were Dimitri Katotakis (baritone) with a prize worth $3,000 and tenor, Aaron Sheppard ($1,500) respectively.
