I’m really sick of the “anything goes” society seem to be moving towards to today – especially for appearance. Yes, I like that we don’t have to dress up as much, to the point that some clubs have either toned down their dress codes for formal dining, or, even CLOSED their most formal dining areas. However, there needs to be a line. I don’t like men wearing “manpris,” for example. It just looks awful and they look sloppy. And after a certain age, it just looks immature, period. I’m also not a big fan of nail art, as you probably know. Thank goodness it isn’t as big of a “thing” anymore!

I don’t think I will ever understand coloured lipstick

I really don’t understand why people want to be fine with just about EVERYTHING, and calling out those who think otherwise. Are we not allowed to have civilized debates? Are we NOT allowed to require certain rules for certain situations? When people have issues with women wearing, say, very short dresses to weddings, it’s considered “body shaming” or “slut shaming.” Well, a dress resembling something one might wear to a bachelorette weekend in Vegas isn’t exactly one someone should wear to a formal, or even semi-formal country club or five star hotel reception, should it? You won’t see guys in shorts, either. Bachelorette party style dresses or even Bermuda shorts for guys (or women) just doesn’t scream wedding for me. Unless said shorts are worn IN Bermuda, at a “smart casual” reception. Speaking of “smart casual,” do people even USE that term anymore? Or has it been replaced with “business casual?”

Speaking of men and their clothing, guys don’t seem to know how to tie ties properly – especially younger, millennial aged men. Aren’t parents responsible for teaching kids how to dress? Shouldn’t these guys’ fathers have taught them years ago? No wonder you see guys look like complete slobs. Even at interviews (I’ve probably written about this before, but I once saw a guy being interviewed at a cafe for what sounded like a job in the legal field. I’m not sure if it was a mock interview or if it was with a real recruiter, but interviewee looked more like he was dressed for class (maybe a little bit more formal, since he was wearing a polo shirt) than for an actual interview. He was slouching a little too. Whether it was real or fake, one should actually LOOK like one is at an interview). As for facial hair – at least MOST guys don’t attempt the Casey Affleck look. I SWEAR that beard has its own agent and PR person! And Twitter account (wait, DOES it have a Twitter account?). And don’t get me started on blue/green/pink/purple hair. Unless it’s Halloween, Pride or St. Patrick’s Day, it’s completely WTF for me.

Then there’s coloured lipstick. What’s the deal, anyway? Estée Edit sells weirdly-coloured lipsticks, as does Sephora Collection. I know it’s probably a fad, but it’s a nasty one and one which isn’t office-appropriate. To me, non-traditional shades are fine for eyes, but lips? Isn’t lipstick meant to accentuate what you have? Shouldn’t you be wearing tones which compliment your colouring? I own two shades lip glosses which look green and black, respectively, but they go on clear and I wear them over or under more traditional colours. However, that’s NOT the same thing as actual blue, black or green. I suppose purple is okay – as long as it’s in the reds/pinks/nudes family. As for nails? I’m (kind of) okay with non-traditional shades on toes (but only because I did it myself, back in high school. Back when Hard Candy polish was THING for the first time around. And green (or blue) toes were the only way I could wear nail polish, since it wouldn’t break the school’s dress code (as feet aren’t visible)).

Maybe I’m just too restrictive. Or old fashioned. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. And I really don’t think it’s all that appropriate for people to experiment TOO FAR – especially if they’re going to events in specific places which are more traditional (the hair situation can’t REALLY be helped. If you’ve coloured your hair green, I won’t expect you to dye it a “normal” colour just for a formal dinner. Or wear a wig). Or have jobs in more traditional areas. But then again, that’s just me.

When I was in my early 20s, I begged my parents to send me to a finishing school in Switzerland. A bona fide school where I would be trained in social graces, international etiquette and everything that goes with a standard finishing school curriculum. We even found one and asked for an application. I was going to spend the summer after university there. Didn’t end up going. Why? 9/11. Became afraid to fly. This is something I regret.

A nice afternoon tea setting (where proper manners should be observed)

During that period, I wrote at least two articles for my university’s newspaper on how I felt about the lack of “properness” in the 21st century. Each time, I was heavily criticized. I was called “dated” and if I recall correctly, “sexist.” All because I wanted to be a “proper lady.” Actually, I don’t think I ever said THAT. I just ranted about the casualization of society, as I do now on this site. However, critics seemed to believe that I was sexist, racist and elitist among other labels. Elitist, perhaps, but sexist? Racist? Why do people always have to think “proper” means traditionally “male” and “Eurocentric” anyway? There are many different definitions of “proper” and modern day finishing schools tend to teach that.

When it comes to sexism, I can arguably say that finishing school/etiquette seminars are indeed FEMINIST (which I noted in an article from 2011). We all want to see more women in the c-suites, right? Well, as an executive, you NEED to know how to interact with a wide range of cultures. You don’t want to, after all, embarrass yourself abroad (or even in your own country if you’re hosting international business people). Thus, you NEED to learn. If you don’t, you’re NEVER going to make it “up there” even if you “lean in” more than anyone else. And this is ESPECIALLY the case if you’re from a more “disadvantaged” background. Don’t try to force people to accommodate YOU and act like a spoiled brat – accommodation should only happen if it’s truly legitimate (religion or health, for example). Even people like Mark Zuckerberg, who is known to wear hoodies to work, have to “know” the rules. Sadly, many young people don’t anymore. Instead, when people say they believe these rules need to exist, it is criticized as being “old school.” However, the rebellious ones, the non-comformists, so to speak, are praised for trying to “change the world.” Sometimes, these so-called “old rules” NEED to exist. We aren’t as “bad” as you think.

The Lunar (Chinese) New Year starts on Friday, and for many of us, especially those who are lucky enough to have many relatives living in or near our hometown, it means dinners and celebrating with family. And if you have a big family, it means lots of uncles, aunts and cousins. And this can get confusing. Why? Because everyone can have several different titles, depending on the relationship degree, the side of the family and whether one is older or younger. This is very different from the English speaking world, where everyone is an aunt, uncle, cousin, parent, grandparent or sibling.

Neat video explaining relative names in Cantonese (goes really fast) via Off the Great Wall

As an only child, I have it a bit easier, since it automatically eliminates “yi/yi mah” (an aunt that is the sister (younger and older, respectively) of the child’s mother) and “gwoo jeh/gwoo mah” (aunt that is the sister of a child’s father). I am also not a gah jeh/mui (older sister and younger sister) – unless you’re very traditional and consider first cousins from one’s father’s side who share your last name (but in that sense, you’re a tong gah jeh or tong mui – though I am a biu jeh/biu mui (older female cousin/younger female cousin). And if my husband was Chinese, then I am also a cam moh (but I think the proper term is cao mo as cao fu means an uncle that is your mom’s brother) as his sister has a child.

The emphasis on the “aunt” and “uncle” also extends to cousins. In the English speaking world, a cousin that is one or more generations removed is still a cousin, and that part is usually emphasized. However, Chinese – or at least Cantonese speaking cultures – one needs to respect elders, so they are always aunts and uncles. Yes, the term bew is used, but it is the “yi/yi mah” or “suk/bak” that is emphasized. The individual is, therefore a cousin-aunt or cousin-uncle. I did not know this until I was well into my teens, so I was probably just as confused as my non-Chinese friends when we were talking about relatives! Note that given names are not traditionally used. For example, siblings are addressed by birth order – first elder sister, second elder brother and fourth younger sister, for example, if you’re the third child out of four.

I have found that those of us who were born and/or raised here are more likely to adopt English speaking terms for aunts and uncles just to avoid confusion (and probably because we are confused ourselves, not having been completely immersed in the culture. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just the way it is). For grandparents, however, traditional names remain. They are still gung gung and poh poh for parents of the mother or yeh yeh and mah mah (unstressed – stressing and using a higher tone would mean “mom”) for the parents of the father. This is a respect thing as the parents are usually immigrants. Any kids my husband and I have will call my parents gung gung and poh poh.

A small portion of a chart listing Chinese relative names (in Cantonese and Mandarin) via A Kwan Family Website (full chart)

Do I think any version is better or worse? Not really. Chinese kinship names can be a massive headache, but at least I don’t have to say whether a grandparent is from the mom’s side or the dad’s side, since it’s automatically known.

Do you come from a culture with different names for relatives, depending on degree of relationship and age? Does it make you crazy like it makes me? Do tell!

I’ve seen it with guys I know. It’s in a recent Quaker Oats ad. It’s also in the poster for the upcoming movie, That Awkward Moment. What am I talking about? It’s the way guys hold spoons. They hold them with their entire hand. Why? It looks so…odd. It isn’t really how one SHOULD be holding cutlery. Spoons should be held with the thumb, index and middle fingers, similar to holding a pen when eating. The only time one can use his or her entire hand is if they’re scooping, say, ice cream – and that’s with an ice cream scoop. And before you ask, yes, I know that That Awkward Moment is supposed to be a comedy targeted at a specific demographic, but the three lead characters are NOT young children, either (even if they may act like one in the movie).

Why are young males holding spoons like this?

This is something I’ve been trying to analyze for the past decade or so and I still haven’t figured out why. I’ve asked guys about it, but many get upset, saying that it isn’t “important” that they aren’t holding their spoons (and often, forks and knives) the “correct” way. Though most seem to mature out of it by the time they hit their 30s (especially if they work in industries where they meet clients and dine at nicer restaurants where more “traditional” table manners are expected), but this isn’t everyone. Some guys will forever believe they’re in university, living four others and dining on pizza, wings and beer. Well into their 50s. Sad.

This kid is not holding his spoon properly

I used to blame it on the “casualization” of society and parents/the fact that many families aren’t eating together anymore, but if that were the case, then wouldn’t females do the same thing? However, I don’t see that. And it’s not like girls are sent to finishing schools/charm schools anymore, either – at least not this in this part of the world. So why do some young guys do this? Is it a “I’m proving my manliness” kind of thing? Or is it just bad influence from media?

DelectablyChic! is excited to present its 3rd Annual Summer Bridal feature, this time a four part series on Wedding Prep, Make Up & Beauty Must-Haves for the 2012 Summer Bride, The Wedding Day, as well as Wedding Related Ideas. Last week, we discussed The Wedding Day and today we move on to Wedding Related Ideas.

Wedding Themed Guest Book and Photo Album:

Although digital albums are becoming increasingly common, there is something very precious about a Guest Book with handwritten, spontaneous messages and a Photo Album with texture. We recommend a matching set and are really in love with the White Sands Wedding Collection by C.R. Gibson. It’s customizable and comes with different initials or ideas for the front cover, or a spot where you can put a photograph of your choice on the cover. The ivory look and feel is timelessly bridal and there’s something very special in having the matching set. In addition to the classic photo album and guest book, there is also a matching loose-leaf Memory Photo Album which you can design more like a scrapbook.

Bridal Shower:

Gift for Maid of Honour:

If you have someone in your bridal party who is struggling in her love life, consider gifting her Katherine Woodward Thomas’ Calling in ‘The One’. Or, even if you are one of the many single gals reading this bridal feature wondering when your true love will come your way, this could be the book that could change your life. Calling in ‘The One’ is an intense 7 week program that really digs deeply into your own inner demons, fears and scars that perhaps are preventing you from being fully open to love. It helps you to start creating your best life to bring in your perfect partner and attract in 7 weeks the love of your life. Based on the Law of Attraction, this very popular program has actually worked for a fair number of people, assuming you complete it as it is a very dense and laborious process.

Don’t Forget to Thank Your Guests Properly for Their Gifts:

These days, the internet is by far most people’s favourite form of communication; it’s quick, easy, and cheap. When it comes to wedding thank yous, however, nothing beats personal and posted thank you notes. This is sadly being forgotten by a lot of brides today and is without a doubt the finishing touch to a wedding. It’s like making the yummiest cake and forgetting the frosting!

So brides – write heartfelt, personalized notes to your guests thanking them for being a part of your special day. If you want help in doing this right, a fabulous book is Marilyn Werner’s The Bride’s Thank-You Note Handbook. It even has suggestions for different notes for different gifts!

DelectablyChic! is excited to present its 3rd Annual Summer Bridal feature, this time a four part series on Wedding Prep, Make Up & Beauty Must-Haves for the 2012 Summer Bride, The Wedding Day, as well as Wedding Related Ideas. Last week, we discussed Make Up & Beauty Must-Haves for the 2012 Summer Bride and today we move on to The Wedding Day.

It’s the tiny details that often really make a wedding day more special. Caught up in ensuring all the big elements are in place, it’s easy to forget to pamper yourself and your guests in little ways.

For the Bridal Waiting Room:

Especially with last minute hiccups and delays, but even if the wedding is on time, waiting in the bridal room can seem never-ending. Decorate or accentuate your waiting room with small luxury items like Pink Peony Large Soy Candle by Aquiesse which is a delicate blend of pink peony, cherry blossom and green ivy that transforms (at least fragrance-wise) what is often a plain white room into an exotic paradise.

For the Bridal Pouch:

The summer is really heating up and if your wedding ends up being held on a particularly humid day, keep lots of water for yourself and your guests. In fact, you can have ice chilled water bottles greeting guests as they enter your venue, followed by your signature cocktail. Don’t forget to also keep a pocket size lotion handy so your skin stays supple. We recommend L’Occitane Bonne Mere Gentle Cream which is a non-oily formula that can be smoothed over hands, body and face.

For Bridal Emergencies:

Worried about bra straps showing or too much cleavage? We at DelectablyChic! are in love with FASHION-AID®, which is a roll on adhesive that eliminates wardrobe embarrassments by instantly securing your clothing and lingerie to your body. By rolling on this translucent, hypoallergenic, water washable fashion adhesive to your skin, you immediately secure slipping bra straps, strapless, off the shoulder, low neckline, revealing styles of clothing, including wedding gowns.

For the Bridesmaids:

The height of trend in nails these days is neon. OPI has great shades including Ridiculously Yellow, Formidably Orange, Riotously Pink and Seriously Purple, all of which come in a mini pack called Outrageous Neons. This pack can also be separated and distributed among bridesmaids, with each bridesmaid wearing a different neon bridesmaid dress with matching nails.

For the Wedding Swag:

We simply fell in love with Aquiesse Luxe Linen 15 Hr Set/2 Votive Candles. This item is so luxurious, even the texture of the box feels like a dollop of pampering. The colour is a very elegant ivory so it is something that can actually add class to a Bachelor pad as much as to a lady’s boudoir.

For the Honeymoon:

DelectablyChic! is excited to present its 3rd Annual Summer Bridal feature, this time a four part series on Wedding Prep, Make Up & Beauty Must-Haves for the 2012 Summer Bride, The Wedding Day, as well as Wedding Related Ideas. Last week, we begin with Wedding Prep and today we move on to the Make Up & Beauty Must-Haves for the 2012 Summer Bride.

Ever since Kate Middleton did her own bridal make-up on her wedding day, more and more brides are choosing to do their own looks. If you are planning to go this route, here are some great insider secrets for a flawless finish and a wow look.

If you have a clear complexion and prefer no-fuss make-up, Smashbox is ideal for your wedding day. Their Photo Finish Hydrating foundation primer, Sheer Focus tinted moisturizer and Halo Hydrating Perfecting Power And Brush Set (travel size so perfect for inbetween ceremony and reception touch-ups) literally make your skin glow. Maybe not quite an Edward Cullens diamond effect, but instead, a very natural, summery, special highlight that brings out the best in all that is naturally you.

For something a bit more formal, nothing tops The Body Shop’s Lily Cole collection, possibly one of the best make-up collections currently out, by any brand. The colours contain just the right amount of shimmer, innovation and to-die-for packaging. We particularly fell in love with the Lip & Cheek Dome, Puff on Radiance (little blush mini balls) and Pearl Radiance Primer. However, even the Liquid Eyeliner and Shimmer Cubes Palette are long-lasting, easily fit in your purse and slide on effortlessly.

Bridal Blush

Vasanti’s Sun Peached Glow brightening mineral powder is also a great way to add a delicate flushed look to your cheeks and is perfect for a summertime bride. As it’s a peach base, it goes very well with most skin tones.

Bridal Eye Shadow

For eye shadow, we love MAC Cosmetics’ Earthly from the Heavenly Creature collection. This celestial style mineral eye shadow is a swirly combo of beige, peach and cool brown mélange. So gorgeous to look at, it really gives a dramatic depth to your eyes and goes on wet or dry and transitions effortless from ceremony to reception, morning through evening.

Bridal Lips

For lipstick, MAC Cosmetics’ Love Long Distance from the Beth Ditto Collection is tailor made for brides. It’s a soft pink shade, long lasting and extremely feminine, especially if you are going to have a dramatic eye look.

Bridal Nails

No bridal look is complete without princess nails. OPI has a stunning oyster pink You Callin’ Me a Lyre? Nail laquer as well as a classic white Don’t Touch My Tutu? – both from their NYC Ballet Collection – that are ideal for brides. They also pair very well for a French manicure. For a bride who wants a little more depth to the colour while still sticking with a classical look, Pedal Faster Suzi! is a very sexy, shimmery, cotton candy pink.

If you are in a funky mood, however, and prefer stick on nails, Kiss Nail Dress (Fashion That Sticks) is uber trendy and comes in all different designs from wild leopard to Dolce & Gabbana style over the top. Just peel them on your tips and file. They easily last 10 days and no drying time.

Bridal Fragrance:

Taylor Swift’s Wonderstruck perfume is sweet yet sexy and has some razzle dazzle to it. Even the packaging is deep bluish-purple with gold charms that make a sound every time you move the bottle. This is a great scent — made from Freesia, Green Tea, Apple Blossom, Raspberry, Dewberry – that transitions effortlessly from wedding to reception to honeymoon.

Another handy trick for your wedding day is to use a body mist. Especially with the extreme heat conditions we’ve been having lately, a body mist ensures that you will walk down the aisle with the best possible fragrance surrounding you. The Body Shop makes a particularly nice one which comes in Strawberry, Vanilla and Pink Grapefruit scents. The Vanilla, in particular, is soft, subtle and sexy; perfect for a bride.

DelectablyChic! is excited to present its 3rd Annual Summer Bridal feature, this time a four part series on Wedding Prep, Make Up & Beauty Must-Haves for the 2012 Summer Bride, The Wedding Day, as well as Wedding Related Ideas.

We begin with Wedding Prep.

Once the engagement ring is on, the official Wedding Prep begins including wedding etiquette:

There are some fantastic books on wedding etiquette. We recommend Something New: Wedding Etiquette for Rule Breakers, Traditionalists, and Everyone in Between by Elise Mac Adam, which is a very modern, relevant handbook to ensure your guests feel comfortable, even in the stickiest of situations.

Even if you decide to go with a wedding planner, it can be handy to have your own Wedding Planner book full of checklists and we simply love the Now & Forever Wedding Planner book by C.R. Gibson. If you are planning your own wedding, this is a fantastic guidebook full of worksheets to keep the bride organized and on schedule, invaluable tips, as well as room to record everything from the guest list to the bridal registry.

Once you know your wedding etiquette inside out and are completely organized by your planner, it’s time to think of those how to add an extra oomph. Check out David Tutera’s My Fair Wedding: Finding Your Vision . . . Through His Revisions! which highlights how a little tweaking can make your wedding much more special and memorable. The book has examples of common or traditional ways of doing things and then has David’s innovative revisions which add that certain flair or panache to the same element of the wedding. This book and its inspired ideas are for that bride who wants that certain something extra.

While the wedding organization is critical, it is even more important for the bride to look radiant on her special day. Hence, the other really critical wedding prep that should be begun immediately is ensuring the bride is healthy, glowing and looking her best.

Brides have traditionally taken time off to be pampered, massaged and well rested. However, even modern, busy brides can still look their best with a few insider beauty tricks.

For the Face:

Vasanti’s Detox Nutrient-Rich Purifying Facial Cleanser feels like heaven on your face and almost like a nightly mini-spa treatment. Although you can start using this anytime, we recommend at least one month before your big day to ensure a natural bridal glow.

If you want a more intense facial cleansing and plumping, consider a Silkpeel Dermalinfusion facial by trained Esthetician Rose Cruz at Ivory Salon & Spa. This is a more advanced technique than microdermabrasion and is said to work wonders with acne and sun damage by intensely hydrating the skin and stimulating the growth of new healthy cells.

For the Hair:

For your hair, try Salon La Coupe Volume, Moisture or Curl Refresh dry shampoo. We recommend using this shampoo at least two months prior to your wedding day to ensure your locks will be in tip-top shape.

Or, if you want to lighten your hair naturally, LUSH Cosmetics’ BIG shampoo is quite an industry secret. Made of seasalt and citrus, it breaks down henna and not only adds volume (hence the name) but gives your hair a sunkissed look with a killer bounce. It’s very potent stuff, however, so you should be careful not to use it more than once a week, particularly if you have baby fine hair.

For Overall Relaxation:

For overall relaxation, try LUSH Cosmetics’ Relax, Take a Bath trio of stress-relievers. Indulge in a hot, steaming bath fragranced with lavender and chamomile in the three different bath products – a Waving Not Drowning bath bomb, Bathos bubble bar and Dreamtime bath melt. Use them one a week for the three weeks leading up to your special day, or indulge in one a day for the last three days prior to your wedding.

Since Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement, there have been many articles and newstories across a wide variety of media about “princess boot camps” – places little girls attend to learn proper etiquette and how to act like a “real princess.” These camps have been criticized by many feminists as reinforcing traditional roles of women having to be “ultra feminine” – something that they’ve been fighting for decades.

Debutantes being presented at the Cloncurry Coronation Debutante Ball (Queensland, Australia) in 1953. Growing up, these young women would have received proper training (similar to “princess boot camps”) to prepare them for their debuts.

There are two things about these “boot camps” that bother me. First is how media are acting as if this is something “new and interesting” when certain families have been sending children to these things in the past as preparation for their roles as adults. It’s only in recent decades that some families have stopped sending their children to charm/finishing schools or cotillion programs, thanks to the casualization of our society (and something Lesley M. M. Blume laments about in her book, Let’s Bring Back). Secondly, the only “problem” certain feminists should have with “Princess Boot Camp” is the name since it’s implying that the “princess” lifestyle is the only way to go – that girls need always need to “marry well.” These “princess camps” also do not spend much time on the actual “role” of princesses, such as philanthropy and focus only on how to curtsy, how to have tea, basically how to “look pretty.” Can’t these so-called feminists argue these points, rather than looking at it from a fairytale perspective?

Etiquette lessons should be considered empowering. Proper etiquette, which includes traditional table manners, is very necessary for anyone, male or female, in the corporate world. And it’s better to learn when one’s a child than later in life, which seems to be happening more and more today. In fact, I think it’s more important to send boys to these camps than girls – “boy culture” hasn’t really changed that much since the old nursery rhyme that said boys were “made of snips and snails and puppy dog tails…” Based on conditioning, girls are just more exposed to these “rules” than boys. These rules also need to be learned over a longer period of time, not in a week-long or weekend-long session. In a world where rude manners rule (see reality shows like Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of __________ and so forth). Sadly, many people, especially the academic types disagree.

What do you think? Would you send your child to an etiquette program? Would you go to one yourself?

Good behaviour is very important at parties, so here are some rules to always remember (regardless of what kind of holiday or party you are going to):

If you’re at a cocktail event, make sure you mingle. Standing around the buffet is not a good thing and neither is sitting in the corner, reading or texting.

Speaking of texting, your phone should be on silent mode. There’s nothing worse than hearing a tinny version of a pop song or even a buzz in the middle of a nice dinner. Phones are for emergencies only.

Don’t dominate a conversation – better to listen than talk. It’s also perfectly acceptable to end one by saying “excuse me, it’s been great meeting you/speaking with you.”

Stay away from controversial topics!

Ask for permission if you are going to take pictures, especially posed ones. Not everyone likes to be in them, especially if you are going to be putting them up on social networking sites.

If you are a guest, don’t criticize the host’s food or house. If you have any dietary restrictions, it’s good to inform the host beforehand. You don’t want any issues when you arrive.

If you are the host, make sure everyone is comfortable and that there’s something for everyone to eat.

If there are younger children a more grown-up party, make sure they’re occupied – DVDs, an art table, anything to keep them busy. Kids around the age of 10 or 12 should be mature enough to join the grown-ups.

Don’t get drunk.

Unless it’s a pot luck, there no reason to expect the hosts to serve what you brought over

If you are at a formal, sit-down meal, remember the following:

Cutlery goes from the outside in

The napkin goes on the lap, not the neck or anywhere else when you’re seated

          Elbows stay OFF the table

Place the fork and knife next to each other (think 4:20 or 5:55) to signify that you have finished

Make conversation with people around you

If you don’t know how to use chopsticks, it’s perfectly fine to ask for a fork
