I think this is only my second post using the dessert basket! The remaining two contestants were to make a dessert using sprinkle donuts, pomelo, peanuts and licorice babies (licorice bits). I had first thought of making some sort of deconstructed dish, but it just dawned on me…cake pops. Sure, they’re not really a “thing” anymore, but they’re fun to eat, especially at parties.
Sprinkle donuts was on the mystery ingredients list for the dessert round (these are already fancier than what was provided)
First, I would crumble the donuts, then mix it with some pomelo juice – about a tablespoon. Using a melon baller, the donut and pomelo mix will be scooped out and placed on a tray, to be placed in the fridge for about three or four hours (or in the blast chiller for a few minutes). While the pops are being chilled, the licorice is melted stovetop and the peanuts are ground.
To create the actual donut cake pop, first, a stick is dipped into into the licorice and then pierce one of the donut balls. Then the donut ball itself is dipped into the licorice, followed by the peanut crumbs. It is then set aside. It will then be repeated with the remaining balls. This would be a great snack for a party.
Note: Almonds or walnuts can be used in place of peanuts. To make it nut-free, graham crackers can be used, too.
