Yes, the appetizer round called for the following ingredients: already-prepped deviled eggs, Canadian smoked cheddar, venison sausages and…get ready for it…rainbow cake decorations. In other words, rainbow sprinkles. Why are ingredients this season so…odd? Anyway…
Can you SERIOUSLY incorporate this into a non-dessert?
So what can you make with this? Let’s think OUTSIDE of the box then. Rather than looking at an actual appetizer, why not brunch? You can certainly make some sort of Benedict-like using eggs, venison sausages and cheese and even the sprinkles. In fact, one of the contestants actually MADE did this. What I’d do, however, is incorporate the sprinkles into a waffle mixture to create….er….a waffle sandwich. Sweet and savoury at the same time and a bit kid-friendly (based on the colours) too. Why not?
First, make the waffles. You can either do this from scratch or, if you’re lazy like me, use a mix. Just add sprinkles in at the end and make your waffles as per usual. I don’t have a waffle maker so I bake mine (yes, you can do this. I have a silicone waffle baking tray. You cook on one side for a certain amount of time, take the tray out and then flip them. The tray, of course, needs to sit on a cookie sheet).
For the sandwich filling, sausages are first cooked stovetop along with some chopped onions and chives. In a separate bowl, the deviled eggs are chopped and mixed together. Cheese is grated and set aside. Once the sausages, chives and onions are done, they are tossed in with the eggs. Take the waffles out of the waffle maker or baking tray fill half the waffle with the egg/sausage/onion/chive mixture and top with cheese. The heat from the sausages should melt the cheese a little. Place the other half of the waffle on top and slice again (across the middle).
To make it perfect for a kid-friendly party, serve it with some carrots, celery and ranch dip.
