A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege to attend the product launch and demonstration for Conair’s Curl Secret curling iron at the TIFF Lightbox. This curling device is being touted as the first fully-automatic curling machine designed for at-home use.” The unique device looks more like a microphone than a than a curling iron, takes about 30 seconds to heat up and has three timed settings (eight, 10 or 12 seconds), depending on how loose or tight the user wants the curls to be.

I have to say that device is very easy to use – attendees had the opportunity to try the device on themselves (after seeing a demonstration using a model) after watching a representative demonstrate on several models. Because the Curl Secret is automatic, all one needs to do is place a strand of hair into the chamber for it to work. The timed setting will let you know when the strand has been curled. However, since only a small amount of hair can be placed in the chamber at a time, it can take close to half an hour to complete the entire head – not a good thing if you’re in a hurry. I also found it a little bit on the bulkier side compared to other curling devices. Finally, I don’t believe there is a smaller, travel-friendly version (yet).
