Danforth Dining: The Local Company

When people think of the Danforth, they think Greek.  However, there are a few non-Greek restaurants in the area such as Pizzeria Libretto, and, if you’re into something more relaxing and loungey, The Local Company (aka Local Co.).  This restaurant, located just a few steps west of Pape station, has delicious menu that is influenced by pubs, parties as well as modern continental cuisine.  Items include pastas, fish, steak as well as delicious appetizers and desserts.

Four cheese arrancini

Recently, my husband and I had the chance to try the restaurant.  Rather than the typical salad or soup, we shared two starters – the sweet potato fries and the arancini (risotto balls).  According to the menu, the sweet potato fries were topped with sea salt and Siracha Aïoli, but it thankfully, it was not nearly as spicy as I thought it would be.  What was really good, however, were the arancini, which was made with four different cheeses (goat cheese, mozzarella, feta and parmesan) and topped with marinara sauce.  The cheeses and risotto were combined at just the right amount to give off the perfect creamy texture and taste.  It was not gooey nor was it too rice-like.

Pan seared salmon with salsa verde

For the main course, I had the pan seared salmon with salsa verde, while my husband had the chicken supreme (stuffed with goat cheese and arugula).  Sides were ordered separately, something that is more common in restaurants at higher price points. I ordered the rapini and roasted red peppers, cooked in garlic and chiles, while my husband had the cauliflower mashed potatoes.  The latter is actually much more potato-y than cauliflower-like, while the former is great for people (like myself) who are not fans of anything too spicy.  As for the main courses themselves, the chicken was rather standard, according to my husband, while I thought the fish was excellent.  Far too often, pan seared salmon is over-cooked and therefore a bit dry.  The dijon and salsa verde also gave the fish the right amount of “tang.”

Local Co Dessert

Delicious, house-made dessert!

Local Co. does not have a printed dessert menu as everything is made in-house.  Usually, there are three or four items, ranging from canoli to tiramisu and crème brûlée.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the back area of The Local Co. becomes a lounge, with a DJ spinning music such as Top 40, R&B and dance.  In addition, the eatery is available to book for events such as showers, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs as well as corporate events.  The Local Company is located on 511 Danforth Avenue, just east of Logan.  Hours are Tuesdays to Saturdays from 5 pm to 2 am.  Phone number is: 416 465 5522

Special thanks to Vicky Weiss for arranging the complimentary visit.
