Dining by the Water at Diner en Blanc 2014

Last night was Toronto’s third Diner en Blanc!  The weather, once again cooperated and several hundred people, all dressed in white, gathered at Ontario Place for a beautiful dinner in front of the lake.  This year’s event was held later than usual – in September rather than late August.  In fact, I joked to another person that everyone was breaking a “traditional” fashion rule of no white after Labour Day!

Diner en Blanc Cake

Someone brought this GORGEOUS cake!

As usual, attendees were not told of the location until the very last minute, arriving in groups as they were picked up by bus at various points throughout the city.  As they entered, guests were entertained by dancers from Hit and Run Dance Productions, and promptly set up their tables and linens (there was no furniture rental) and picked up the wine they ordered when they confirmed attendance.  It’s always interesting to see what food people bring.  One table brought chicken stuffed with foie gras while another had a beautifully decorated cake.  Yet another had sushi.  I even saw people with whole pineapples covered with icing sugar or some other white powder.  Of course, people only had to WEAR white.  There was no requirement to bring white coloured food.  Guests were entertained by a live band as they ate.

I liked this year’s venue.  The space was beautiful!  There’s just something about dining by the water.  However, due to the later date, it was slightly chillier and it would have been nice if everyone was able to dine as the sun set.  By the time most tables were set up, it was already past dusk.  Maybe Diner en Blanc would return to its August date in 2015!
