Toronto held its first Diner en Blanc last night – August 9, 2012. Despite the cold and pouring rain, some 1,000 participants, all donning white from head to toe descended to Fort York around 7 pm, with meals packed in picnic baskets, catching the attention of many. Diner en Blanc, which started in Paris in 1988, is often marketed as the first “viral” event – a flash mob dining party before the term “mob” was even coined for large, impromptu gatherings. Eighteen cities are participating this year, including Montreal, Vancouver, Berlin and New York.
Registration for this event had a long waiting list – there were three phases of registration, starting with those who had connections with the organizers. There are also very specific rules, in addition to the donning of white, (and they MEAN white, even for media – including shoes (which meant that I nearly wasn’t able to attend – getting access to white shoes (as in traditional bridal white) is very difficult for me thanks to my small feet) including the bringing of one’s own linens and furniture to white balloons and the waving of white napkins to start the meal. At this year’s event there were many creative looks, including one who came in a “hippie bride” look. Many were according to brand – elegant, yet “different.”
As for the food, though some people brought their own, baskets were also provided for attendees. There were no colour restrictions (thank goodness – otherwise it would be pretty bland looking!), so items ranged from prosciutto and tomatoes to seafood salad, grains as well as a variety of cheeses. One of my favourites was a white cake decorated with flowers, brought by one of the attendees. Dining continued until 9:30, when dancing began.
Despite the rain and cool weather, everyone had a great time. This event is only going to get better, so expect a bigger, more exciting event next time.
