They’re everywhere. It’s in the magazine. It’s on social media – there have been numerous Tweets, pins, and Facebook posts about them, but what’s the deal? Why are we, all of a sudden, wearing them? I feel like patterned pants came almost out of nowhere. Before this season, only a few designers were coming out with them (save for the “critter pants” J.Crew had back circa 2008) and just last year, many of us would have thought they were ugly (and many still do) and belonged on un-trendy retirees or on loungewear. Bold is in, of course, but for some reason, I can’t get over the whole idea of patterned bottoms that aren’t skirts. It’s still a little…loud…for my tastes. If I want pattern, I’d go with dresses, tops or skirts. Besides, who knows how long this would last? I’m not trying to be untrendy, but asking an honest question. And do we really like them or are people just following what media are telling us is “in”?
I guess it’s a little like UGGs and similar boots. They’re everywhere, and many people – especially women – are wearing them and were, at one point, very trendy, but at the same time, are not exactly…attractive. I have to admit that people who wear them seem to get a lot of attention, though. These days, it seems that the louder and weirder you are, the more likely people will talk about you. That’s why celebrities like Lady Gaga or and Nicki Minaj get magazine covers wherever they go.
What do you think of the patterned pants trend? Have you bought any? If you haven’t, would you?
