Petite-focused e-store, Gambita, picks modelling competition winner.  Below is a short video featuring highlights of the model search, including a short interview with Gambita founder and CEO, Caroline Misan Alvo where she mentions the difficulty of finding models under 5’4″ in New York.

As a petite woman, I hope that this would lead to changes in the fashion industry (though I’m not setting my hopes too high – there’s still issues regarding plus versus “straight” and body image activists still don’t fully acknowledge the height problem.  I am hoping that more designers either start expanding their lines to include petite sizing and that we see more petite-exclusive designers (which would hopefully lead to true petite models – ones who are actually short and not on the tall side of average (i.e. NOT 5’7″)).  Maybe that way, one won’t get the kind of rude reaction Caroline got from (non-commercial) agencies!  We just have to make petite “normal” for fashion just as plus is beginning to be “normal.”
