Grace Kelly Biopic Trailer Out: Thoughts?

Several blogs, including Jezebel have posted the trailer.  I had heard that they were making a movie and it was to star Nicole Kidman in the lead, but I had forgotten about it until today.  To tell you the truth, I’m not too sure about it.  There have just been so many “biopics” lately – three are going to be out in the next few months (Diana, Mandela and this one) – I feel like this is just going to get lost.  Sure, Grace Kelly had what many would consider a “magical” life, going from movie star to princess, but if she had not married Prince Ranier III, wouldn’t she just be another movie star?  Would there have been as much controversy surrounding her life (and later, death)?

The movie is being released in November in North America, just a couple of weeks after the Princess Diana film, starring Naomi Watts.  I feel like this was done on purpose.  After all, both films are about women of at least somewhat privilege who married into royal families and known for their style (both films are also quite controversial in terms of the script and how “real” the story lines are).  However, for those of us who are younger – under 40 – Diana seems to have made a much stronger impact in the world of philanthropy.  We remember seeing her visit those who were in need, including people dying of AIDS – something that many just didn’t “do” back in the 80s.  The Princess Grace Foundation USA, however, is largely focused on the arts, which is, while important, a bit more “frilly” than becoming involved (and hands-on at that) in something that one isn’t supposed to “discuss.”

In terms of casting, I haven’t seen enough of the trailer to really know if Nicole was the right actress for the role.  According to the information I’ve found, the film starts when Grace Kelly is in her 30s, right before she marries Prince Rainier III in 1957 and runs into the 60s, during a dispute that Monaco had with France.  Some people have criticized that Nicole is a bit too old for the role, but considering that the film seems to span over a few years, it might not be that much of a problem.  A lesser-known actress, however, may have been a better choice.

What are your thoughts on the film (based on the trailer)?  Will you see it?
