Grilled Cheese Stop Two: Construction Site Yonge and Eglinton

The Construction Site, currently with two locations in Toronto, is another grilled cheese joint that opened in the city over the past several months. An affiliate of Druxy’s, this restaurant offers a smaller menu than other competition, six items in total, which change slightly every month. A new “featured” sandwich is introduced each month and the lowest selling item from the previous month is taken out. The six items do not include the dessert (one choice (s’mores), soups (a soup of the day or tomato with roasted red pepper and feta) and a caprese salad.

Unlike Say Cheese, which has more of a gourmet quick-bite feel, The Construction Site is more fast food. Sandwiches are served in small, pizza-like cardboard boxes with a dipping sauce and a side (either rosemary seasoned potato chips or a Napa salad). At my first visit, I tried the Cha Cha Cha, made with jalapeno havarti, feta, red onions, avocado on ancient sourdough bread. It was accompanied by a tomato salsa dip and I chose the Napa salad as my side. My dining partner had a classic grilled cheese sandwich with added bacon (you could also add tomato), ketchup as a dip and chips on the side. The Cha Cha Cha was amazing, with perfectly melted cheese that oozes into the avocado. The sandwich was a former featured item, and based on how it tastes, I understand why it stuck. However, the Napa salad was a little to low on the cabbage and a little too high on the noodles. While I did not get to try the classic grilled cheese with bacon, I did have a couple of chips. While I liked the fact that the chips were warm, they were far too salty for my tastes. I also thought that the tomato soup could be offered as a side as well. After all, tomato soup and grilled cheese go hand-in-hand. Oh well, maybe something they can look into.
