Many of us here in Toronto are too busy covering TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) to really write about New York Fashion Week, but I’ve decided to juggle both and post this piece about the Hervé Léger Spring/Summer 2014 collection. I love Hervé Léger. Max and Lubov Azria and their team manage to put together interesting collections each season, even though the basic look of a bodycon bandage dress stays the same. For Spring/Summer 2014, there is a bit of an update, but the warrior princess look continues, with a mixture of “armour,” zipper and leather detailing, with a palette of blacks and whites and hints of peaches and blues.
I have quite a few favourites, including a peach, white and grey dress with a flipped hem and a pencil dress with fringe detailing. Another favourite is what looks like a two piece – a white tank top and black skirt with gold zipper trimmings. It’s to see more variety than the standard pencil dress. The detailing of every single piece in the collection was also great to look at – it is truly a work of art.
For most part, the shapes work well on short, small-framed figures. As a petite girl, I find it very hard to watch some fashion shows and then try to imagine what something might look like on me. However, Hervé Léger is usually not a problem, even with the detailing on many of the pieces – they do NOT overwhelm. In fact, I found that some of the looks were a little OFF on these near-six footers – especially the corset and shorts pieces (it’s not nearly as bad in the photos as it is on video). Because of their height and proportions, there is just too much leg to show. I want to see the shorts, not the fact that the model is practically naked. This isn’t a swimwear or lingerie show. Tall isn’t always better. In fact, models for some of these looks should have been well under 5’8″ – preferably in the 5’5″ or 5’6″ range, max.
This post was for this week’s IFB Project, which asked us to share our favourite NYFW looks.
