IDS 2014: Touch Screen Kitchens, Kids’ Design, Fashionable Carpets and More

The Interior Design Show (IDS) opens to the public Saturday morning and media were able to get a sneak preview on Thursday morning.  Opening to the public this Saturday and Sunday, there is definitely a lot to check out.  Some old favourites are back, including Miele, which is debuting their Generation 6000 appliances in their 5,000 square foot demonstration area – the largest space at IDS.  The collection includes a dual steam and convection oven and espresso machine with touch screen displays.  The espresso machine also has sensors which can detect cup size and will lower to just 1 cm above the cup and will dispense the perfect coffee-based drink.

Another large display space is Korhani Home.  Known for their over-the-top, themed-based runway shows at World Mastercard Fashion Week, where models strut down wearing pieces created by carpet, their booth at IDS is no different.  Rather than a standard booth featuring their pieces, Korhani continues with their fashion-inspired philosophy by creating something more art-inspired.  Attendees can walk through the space, which is, more or less, kind of like a haunted house or “fun house” at a fair, featuring several exhibits, all with talking mannequins.  These mannequins, which have faces displayed on them will describe the specific space.  Perhaps the best way to describe Korhani’s booth is, for the lack of a better term, “creepy.”

If you’re looking to decorate a nursery or a kid’s room, there is a section called Modern Kid, including Draw Me a Sheep.  This baby boutique, located in the Annex area, not only sells baby products (including many by local and independent brands), but also provides design services.  There are three packages available, ranging from a complimentary consultation at the boutique (parents will need to bring in room measurements and photos) to an in-house consultation ($180 an hour) to the big package, which not only includes consultation, but also the purchasing of furnishings, wallpaper design and accessories (this package starts at $3,500).

IDS 2014 Studio North

Lights at Studio North

In addition to “regular” booths, Studio North is once again back.  With whimsical pieces, this area consists of many up-and-coming, independent designers.  Perhaps one of the most interesting were the lights made from wine glasses, seen just at the entrance of the area.

IDS is held at the north building at the Metro Convention Centre.  Hours for the public are: Saturday, from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm.  Tickets are $19 online and $22 at the door.  Kids under 12 are free.  There are additional costs to special presentations by designers.
