LABEL: North American, Lakeside Cool

While many designers were calling for the tropics, the vibe that came from LABEL’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection was closer to home, with more of a North American coastal or lake/cottage-like feel than the tropics.  The looks are mostly short (almost too short on models – is LABEL technically a petite label?) shorts, dresses and skirts, with a few longer pieces as well.  Colour-wise, it stayed away from the corals and oranges that are very popular for the Spring/Summer 2012 season and opted for blues and greys – more water-like – instead.  There was, of course, the requisite Little White Dresses as well as some blacks.

The show took place in the studio space, a smaller, more intimate setting.  The presentation itself consisted of models first walking down the runway, but instead of returning backstage, they posed on small, flat platforms – a good thing for the audience as they could take a longer look at the looks.  However, the blue lighting at the end made it a little difficult to truly see the colours.  Perhaps this was meant to make us feel like we’re under water.

Favourites in this collection include a flowy brown, teal and cream coloured dress with long sleeves, as well as a look with a gauzy, translucent grey maxi skirt.  Period-wise, the collection had a bit of a 70s feel, sticking with a trend that came with the current Fall/Winter season. Any pieces on the no side?  Not really, other than a turquoise jumper that was paired with a black t-shirt (or was it meant to be a mock jumper and t?), which could look a little bit “junior school casual uniform”-like.  However, when styled correctly, the dress could look grown-up.
