Let’s Go To the Ex 2012!!

For Torontonians, the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition (aka the CNE or just plan “the Ex”) marks the end of summer.  Opening today and running until September 3, growing up, this event was the last thing I did before school started.  After all, the Ex closes on Labour Day, and most schools in Ontario open the following day.

Swing ride at the Ex

Tot some, the Ex is about the midway – traditional fair rides like carousels and Ferris wheels as well as games (where people can win stuffed animals) – while others find them a little bit, well…”old fashioned.”  There are, of course other things to see, including the traditional horse show, which has been part of the Ex for decades, a hands-on farm and of course concerts and shows.  Performers slated to play this year include Nick Carter and the Tea Party.

Food has traditionally played an important role at the Ex.  “Strange” items such as bacon sundaes and fried cola have traditionally been part of the menu as well as “trendier” items (raw foods!).  Of course, there’s traditional fair food such as funnel cakes and the famous Tiny Tom Donuts.  For those interested in more gourmet fare, several celebrity chefs will be making appearances at this year’s Ex, including David Rocco, Roger Mooking and Dufflet Rosenberg.

Of course, the Ex isn’t the Ex without the International Air Show, which will be held over Labour Day weekend.  Exact confirmation of who is appearing has not been confirmed, so watch the website!
