Lucian Matis Reception and Show at the Royal York

The very first show of the week was Lucian Matis, held at the Royal York Hotel.  However, before the presentation, attendees were treated to a reception of sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres (the food was not too bad, albeit a little on the brown side).  One of the sponsors, Smashbox, was there to give lip touch-ups.

The show itself was held in one of the hotel’s ballrooms, which was set up to form a “U” shaped runway with three columns of seats with models walking down one side and up the other.  Showing off site at the Royal York was definitely a great decision for Lucian as the collection worked better in a large space with very high ceilings and lots of light.  The pieces were all black or very dark and would not have the kind of pop it did had the collection been presented at the tents – the looks were very typical Lucian Matis.  There was a lot of dark, lace-like material overlaying nudes and feathers as well as some interesting headgear.  It was, as usual, very much art rather than something that a “typical” woman might wear, with pieces that would overwhelm many figures (feather looks anyone?).  However, this isn’t to say that the collection was completely bad.  The detailing on each and every piece was very artistically and many had his signature regal vibe.

Lucian Matis will also be showing his Matis by Lucian Matis line this week.  Here’s hope to more colour!
