Mercedes-Benz Canada Announces New Fashion Mentorship Program

Though Mercedes-Benz is the title sponsor of New York’s Fashion Week and not ours, the luxury brand still plays a role in Canadian fashion.  This evening, Mercedes-Benz Canada announced a new mentoring program, called Mercedes-Benz StartUp, to help emerging Canadian designers whose labels have been established fewer than five years.  Designers across the country will compete to show a collection at LG Fashion Week this October and the winner will develop a full collection with help from those more established.

Designers participating in the StartUp program compete for a chance to present at LG Fashion Week

StartUp, is, of course, not the first program to help emerging Canadian designers – The Toronto Fashion Incubator holds its New Labels competition every year.  However, having another program, especially one with ties to LG Fashion Week is a big deal as it will give even more emerging designers media exposure and therefore more Canadian designers into the limelight.  According to Twitter, interviews for StartUp will begin this summer.
