The tents may have been freezing, but World MasterCard Fashion Week kicked off yesterday afternoon with Mikhael Kale’s show in the studio space. The collection was full of ruffly embellishments, inspired napkins, as well as metals (the napkin ring). In many ways, it was also a little bit “rocker chick.”
The colours were a little interesting – blacks (black was fairly strong in the collection) and whites (of course) as well as other shades, including greens and reds, including one in a deep burgundy (seen in a sleek cropped sweater and pencil midi). While there were definitely plenty of solids, we saw many patterned and floral motifs as well, with many of them being more three dimensional. The patterning is definitely NOT made to resemble one’s 80 year-old grandmother’s napkin collection from the 60s and 70s (though some pieces come close)!
Most of the looks can be made “wearable” in real life. While most of the looks require one to be on the slimmer side, the super-tall height of models is not necessarily required. Though the skirt lengths might not be ideal for shorter women, many of the pieces seem easily alterable. In other words, no expensive “reconstruction” is likely necessary. However, this based on what was seen at the show and the conclusion may be different after trying something on or actually physically touching the garment.
Picks from this collection? Definitely the wine-coloured cropped sweater and pencil skirt (but the skirt should be closer to knee length so it would fit more body types), which was also seen in a silvery-grey and some of the black, more “rocker chick” looks. I have to say, however, that the shoes the dresses were paired with might not have been the best choice. They made the walks look a bit…clunky.
