New Summerhill Market Location Caters to Midtown Foodies

Summerhill Market, which has been a staple in Rosedale and Summerhill homes since 1954, has opened a second location on Mount Pleasant, north of Eglinton at the former Sherwood Market, which was owned by the uncle of current manager, Brad McMullen.  This store, which is smaller than their first location offers what Brad calls “the best of the best.”  From prepared soups and sauces to brands not seen in other stores in the city, such as FAGE Greek yogurt.  There are also some very unique items.  For example, sliced and packaged fruit is found in many food stores, but they tend to be mangoes, pineapples or berries.  Summerhill Market also sells sliced oranges that are not only rind-less, but the interior skin is peeled as well.  The salad greens sold at the store are prepared by Summerhill Market staff who wash, cut and package them, making it fresher and chemical-free, unlike many of the packaged greens one buys at other stores.

I recently had a chance to not only tour the store, but I to try some of the products.  I have to say that some of my favourites so far include the skinless oranges, as well as the chicken pot pie.  The chocolate chunk cookies, which are HUGE (coffee shop sized at 4 1/2″ or so in diameter) are amazing and a little bit between chewy and crunchy.   I would definitely like to go back and the other types of cookies.  The potato chips are not bad either, though a little greasy.

Summerhill Market also offers a catering service and is currently promoting their Thanksgiving dinner  For $23.75 a person, a complete turkey dinner with all the fixings including mash potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce and stuffing. Competitor Pusateri’s offers their Thanksgiving catering a la carte.   There is, of course, also a standard catering menu for all types of occasions.  Items to choose from include a variety of soups and salads as well as sandwich, cheese and appetizer platters, mains and desserts (both the appetizers and desserts look amazing).  One can have an entire dinner party just by the click of a mouse or a phone call.

The new location of Summerhill Market is on 1054 Mount Pleasant Road. Store hours are 8 am to 9 pm Mondays to Saturdays and 8 am to 8 pm on Sundays.

The author would like to thank Duet Communications for making arrangements for me to visit the store and for Brad and the store management for the delicious bag of goodies!
