What are your traditions? When I was little, my (late maternal) grandmother would light candles with me. I have NO CLUE where that came from. She told me it was a “tradition” but I don’t know anyone who does it. Maybe it was something she invented, but it wasn’t something I ever asked her. It’s also not something I’ve done since I was six or seven. For a few years, my parents went out with another couple who had a daughter. The girl stayed at my house because my grandparents would be there and would babysit the both of us. I guess on any other night, this would be considered a “half sleepover,” but because it was New Year’s Eve, we were allowed to stay up late. Our parents didn’t get back until 12:30 at the earliest. It was quite fun from what I remember. In my early 20s, I either celebrated at a dinner with my parents or went out to parties.
We usually order samosas among other items on New Year’s Eve
Since 2009, my husband (who at that time was my fiancé) and I have had Indian food. The first year, I attempted to make butter chicken, but since we married in 2010, it’s been delivery. We prefer a quiet evening, enjoying dinner in PJs/sweats/yoga pants and watching the New Year’s celebrations from Times Square in New York on television. In the past, we went out or were out of town, but we find that New Year’s Eve in is just more relaxing. I like the way we currently celebrate. I’d rather be home then at a party. It’s more relaxing and we won’t have to deal with traffic or the hoards of people taking public transit to get home after midnight! We will, however, be going out to brunch with my family on January 1.
What do you do? Are you a going out to party type or do you like staying at home? Maybe you’re hosting a party. Or do you not bother to do anything at all and just head to bed before midnight? Anyway, just want to wish everyone a very happy new year, however you choose to party.
