The Oscars 2011: Likes and Dislikes

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

So the Oscars are over for another year.  .  We were happy that The King’s Speech pretty won four awards, including Best Picture (we really loved The Social Network, but thought it was a little preliminary to make a movie about Facebook at this time) and The Social Network and Inception took home a few as well.  DelectablyChic! Tweeted throughout the show, sharing our thoughts and views of many of the memorable moments of the show.  There were many things we liked and disliked about the broadcast, including:

Likes:

  • Didn’t go overtime!  Short and sweet!
  • Orange/red being the new black
  • Natalie Portman’s violet Rodarte dress
  • The kids from PS22 in Staten Island
  • Matthew McConaughey actually looking somewhat clean (ahem!)
  • Halle Berry’s tribute to Lena Horne
  • Hologram Bob Hope
  • Melissa Leo’s F-bomb!!!!! (We heard EVERYTHING up here in Canada…oops!!)
  • Anne Hathaway’s tux (I hear it was Lanvin)
  • James Franco’s grandmother

Dislikes:

  • Celine Dion (this was a serious part of the show – I’m sorry, but couldn’t they have found someone else?)
  • James Franco (dude looked high)
  • Gwyneth’s singing
  • Many of Anne Hathaway’s dresses (especially the shiny blue one she wore at the very end.)
  • Randy Newman’s performance (couldn’t really hear him – was there a mic problem?)
  • Comparing Gone with the Wind to Titanic (REALLY????!!)
  • Reese Witherspoon’s Barbie hair

What did you like and dislike about the Oscars this year?  Did you like the hosts?  (I think Anne Hathaway was all right, but James Franco, well, he was James Franco.  I liked the idea of using younger hosts to draw a younger audience, but it’s very difficult, since most young celebrities don’t have that sophistication to host (as James Franco has proved).  We are likely going to be reverting to middle aged comedians in 2012. ) What about the winners?  Did they deserve the awards?  What about the gowns?
