Revisiting Hue’s Kitchen on Yonge and Bloor

We first visited this restaurant over two years ago when the site was still called Prospere Magazine.  Things haven’t changed much –  meals are still ordered from a slip (similar to those seen at dim sum restaurants), with a huge range of soup noodles (both rice and wheat based, beef, chicken and vegetarian choices as well as spicy and non-spicy soup bases), platters and more as well as deep fried and salad rolls.  The food itself hasn’t changed much either – it isn’t AMAZINGLY good, but not awful – a good place to stop by for lunch.

My starter was typically something I’d order at the restaurant -tofu and avocado salad rolls. Wrapped in a rice paper roll, the appetizer comes with a small dish of hoisin sauce and is, of course, much lighter than a standard spring roll, making it a good alternative starter.  Something to note is that presentation of food has gone down a bit since the first article – the salad rolls in the original article look much more…artistic than the image above.  Not exactly a good sign.

For the main course,  I tried something I hadn’t ordered before – hot and sour soup noodles with tofu and vegetables (there are meat versions of this dish as well).  I’m not really into spicy foods, but this was fairly mild, though still with a bit of a kick. Pair that with a bit of tartness and you’ve got a pretty good lunch.   The noodles were not over-cooked, but I was a little bit put off that there was only two small pieces of tofu.  Considering that this was a tofu and vegetable dish, there should have had a few more pieces.  However, if you are looking for a strong kick, you’ll need to add extra hot sauce.

In addition to East Asian-inspired dishes such as soup noodles and fried rice, they also have a small selection of South Asian-inspired dishes.  I have yet to try their roti wraps, so look for a write-up on these wraps coming soon!

Hue’s Kitchen is located on 774 Yonge Street, just south of Bloor.
