Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s is a film about one of the most luxurious department stores in the United States and features interviews with designers like Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg as well as celebrities. It is the film companion to the book, Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman, and also details the store’s history, from being a simple women’s tailoring shop to an emporium of luxury.
Of course, the trailer is a little bit biased. Yes, Bergdorf’s is one of the ultimate emporiums of luxury, but the trailer, at least, makes it sound like it’s the one and only. I’ve personally been to the store, even shopped there. Heck, I even tried on wedding gowns there (ended up purchasing elsewhere). But I’ve found some of the departments a bit…old fashioned without the wider open space that Saks, for example, has. Everything just seems…closed. It’s the same feeling I have when I go to Holt Renfrew in Montreal. The vibe is vastly different from the Toronto stores and even more so from Vancouver, which is even newer. Of course, Holt’s isn’t Bergdorf’s, but still, it’s the vibe that counts.
I am definitely interested in seeing this. While I am unsure if the film is going to make its way outside of the United States, I am hoping that Canada will at least get a DVD release or download from iTunes. It’s a good way to comment on social history and the changes in fashion over the years. The department store is, after all, close to 115 years old. And considering that the “it” show right now is Masterpiece’s Mr Selfridge (more on this in another post), I’d be interested in getting a less overly-dramatized version of what department stores were like more than a century ago. And on this side of the Atlantic.
Do you have plans to see this film? Have you ever been to Bergdorf’s?
