Seven Grams Espresso Bar Has an Indie Vibe

It looks like Yorkville area bloggers have a new place to park their Macs (other than the seven or so Starbucks and Second Cups) as  Seven Grams Espresso Bar, an independent coffee bar with free Wi-Fi has recently opened its doors on Avenue Road, just south of Davenport. Founded by Heran Choi and Sunmi Park, the bar’s name came from the standard amount of espresso used to make a drink.  The cafe, which has a true independent vibe boasts two levels of seating, large windows with lots of natural light and walls filled with artwork by local artists.  A patio will open in the upcoming weeks.

Flat White

Besides standard espresso drinks, Seven Grams also serves pour-overs, trifecta (similar to Starbucks’ Clover system), drip, cold drip and French Press. The prices are slightly more expensive than its competitors on the count of its size availability.  For the most part, only one is offered.  However, the service (on real cups and saucers, or for ice drinks, in jars with handles) and setting are definitely worth the price.  Food-wise, the selection is smaller compared to the bigchains and independent cafes just a bit west in the Annex, but it’s better to keep selection simple.  Otherwise it can get a little too overwhelming.

Iced latte

Seven Grams is definitely promising. in terms of its offerings.  However, the location is a little bit quiet (slightly off from shopping and offices) and its hours aren’t great (they open from 7 to 7 on weekdays, 8-6 on Saturdays and 9-6 on Sundays).  Closing at 6 and 7 pm respectively won’t attract a post-dinner crowd when there are so many restaurants just across the street.  Also, the early closing time is less likely to attract indie bands who might be looking for performance venues other than bars.  Let’s hope that Seven Grams will have later hours in the near future.  After all, summer’s coming and more people will be strolling around the neighbourhood in the evening.
