Sharing a Meal – From the Same Plate… Yay or Nay?

I recentlly had lunch at one of those “nicer” fast food joints – you know, the kind that charges you like $8 for a sandwich without a drink.  The place we went to only had communal tables, and a couple sitting across from us ordered a salad.  To share.  And eaten from the same bowl.  Some types of food don’t look at all odd shared –  appetizers and desserts, for example. And some foods are meant to be eaten family style.  However, people usually have their own place settings.  Besides sharing dessert from the same plate as my husband, the only other times I’ve shared from the same plate, without my own place setting were at a friend’s birthday party when I was in elementary school.  Her parties were held at Lime Ricky’s and instead of a cake, she’d order a HUGE ice cream sundae and all of us would eat from the same bowl.  Looking back, it was kind of gross. But anyway…

A couple shares a salad from the same plate.  Romantic/normal or should they eat from their own place settings?

Do you think this is a little unusual?  Am I being too critical of how people are eating?  After all, it’s not really my business unless they’re being gross. In fact, it’s none of my business, period.  Besides, it was a fast food place, not fine dining.  And there could have been many reasons why they didn’t separate the meal.  Maybe they thought it was romantic to share like that.  Or they didn’t want to make a mess that could be caused by putting half the portion on the lid.  Or, one half wasn’t as hungry as the other.  Whatever this is, what do YOU think about it?  Have YOU shared food with a significant other, especially something that’s part of a main meal?
