Sid Neigum: Many Practical Shades of Neutrals

Sid Neigum, who won the 2014-2015 Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition last season, presented his collection Monday evening, the first night of World MasterCard Fashion Week.  The models walked down the runway to a string quartet, wearing pieces which were a combination of very wearable pieces to ones which were a bit more artistic.  The palate was predominantly black, with some grey and the aforementioned little bit of white (two pieces).

The looks were fairly “typical” of Sid.  Asymmetrical and geometric cuts, some fairly short on models (which is good news for us petite ladies, since it would be office-appropriate) as well as others which would be better for them than for us – looks that are very overwhelming on shorter frames.

While I am usually more of a practical type, preferring simple cuts with only a little bit of embellishment, I have to admit that I liked many of the more artistic pieces – especially the fuller, ruffly-hemmed skirt above (left).  The skirt is not exactly “hemmable,” but it could work on certain shorter frames if appropriately styled.  Depending on height, the skirt can be just below the knee to around mid-calf (the WORST length for shorter women).  However, since it isn’t a straight or pencil skirt, it’s more forgiving on shorter frames.  The only issue is that the ruffles can be a little overwhelming on petites.
