The Death of the Skinny Jean Has Been Greatly Exaggerated

People have been predicting the death of the skinny jean for years.  In fact, they say that the fall season is most definitely the end.  After all, New York fashion editors have been photographed wearing anywhere from flares to boot cut to, well, anything that isn’t skinny (no, “distressed” doesn’t really count, since they can be skinny or non-skinny).  However, that’s not REALLY the case.  The skinny is still available EVERYWHERE.  In fact, it’s hard to find anything that isn’t skinny, regardless of whether the brand is affordable or premium.

While yes, I DO admit that I’m tired of skinny jeans – I have way too many pairs (mostly medium to dark wash)- I also love them to bits.  Toronto’s winters aren’t exactly boot cut or flared pants-friendly, so skinny jeans (or leggings) and big sweaters/tunics are very much part of a female Torontonian’s winter uniform.  The past few years of skinny jeans meant that my pants stayed clean and dry as they were tucked into my boots.  I would think MANHATTAN-LIVING EDITORS would agree – New York’s winters aren’t that great either.  Even if they Uber/have drivers take them everywhere, they MUST have to be outside SOME OF THE TIME!  And dirty/wet pants ARE NOT fun.  Nor is wearing cropped pants with heels in the middle of January or February!  I guess we just have to see what they’re wearing to the fall 2017 shows.

Of course, there are those who suffer just in the name of style/being fashionable.  Seriously, five inch heels in the dead of winter?  Ladies, please!  There are plenty of nice looking, chunky boots that are just as stylish and more weather-appropriate.  Then again, chunky boots don’t exactly catch a photographer’s eye, nor will they garner as many comments/likes on social media.  And it’s really only the more junior to middle level editors who attempt this – for the most part anyway.  Anna Wintour, for example, will just stick to her uniform of oversized sunglasses and more business-like pieces.  However, we aren’t talking about Anna here.  We’re talking about the younger, more photographed/selfies/social media socialite set.

So what am *I* going to do?  As I said, I love my skinnies, so I’ll likely still be wearing them.  However, because I’m also tired of the style, I’m not going to buy any new ones.  I have too many pairs anyway – and not shopping is a great way to save money, right?  I’ll probably wear them LESS OFTEN – after all, I managed to go through three years of my life during my twenties not even TOUCHING anything denim (I was going through a “denim is improper” phase (I would probably have worn dresses and skirts all the time if Toronto wasn’t as cold).  Besides, if so many brands are still selling them, it ain’t dead.  Yet.  Long live the skinny, I suppose.
