Brunch at Toronto’s Lola’s Commissary is quite good. This restaurant, located on Church Street about one and a half blocks south of Bloor, offers more creative and unusual choices not found at other restaurants which offer brunch. Though the typical eggs benedicts are on the menu, other interestingly creative choices include the egg white fritatta, which is made with goat cheese, spinach, mushrooms and a hemp pesto as well a a cheesecake French toast (fruit compote and cheesecake). This was what I had at my recent visit, and I can say that it’s one of the best I’ve had in a while. A scrambled egg dish made with “lots of lovely bits” is called the Kitchen Sink, which is also avialable in wrap form (though I’m not sure how this dish even sounds remotely attractive. Maybe it’s reverse psychology?). All dishes come with sides of either frites, salad or something called “sexy potatoes” – a mix of roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes.

The restaurant itself is housed in a Victorian house. The high ceilings (windows alone are 16′) and slightly industrial feel along with its slightly eclectic menu give the restaurant its unique character. In good weather, one can also dine outside on the front patio. In addition to brunch, the restaurant also offers a regular lunch menu Tuesdays to Fridays. The restaurant does not open for dinner and is closed on Mondays. Lola’s Commissary is located on 634 Church Street. Phone number is 416-966-3991.
