In fact, I didn’t realize that “egg rolls” to me meant something completely different to other people (an “egg roll” to someone from Hong Kong or of Hong Kong descent, is a rolled wafer/cookie-like snack that one finds in tin boxes at the Chinese supermarket. Thus, throughout most of elementary school, I wondered why my non-Chinese friends were having a cookie as an appetizer)! Growing up, Chinese food meant beef and gai lan (Chinese mustard greens – similar to broccoli rabe), steamed fish and the like, not beef and (western) broccoli or chop suey (I didn’t know what that was until I was older, either) However, I have to say that the Canadianized stuff can be comfort food and last weekend, my husband and I ordered just that.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="16248" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/oriental-taste-canadianized-chinese-food-delivery/orientaltastemeal/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?fit=540%2C373&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,373" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.4","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1367776890","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.13","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.05","title":""}" data-image-title="orientaltastemeal" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?fit=300%2C207&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?fit=540%2C373&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-16248" alt="orientaltastemeal" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?resize=540%2C373" width="540" height="373" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?w=540&ssl=1 540w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?resize=150%2C103&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?resize=300%2C207&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/orientaltastemeal.jpg?resize=65%2C45&ssl=1 65w" sizes="(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

There aren’t many “Canadianized” Chinese restaurants in Toronto anymore, but after some research online, we came across Oriental Taste and ordered egg rolls, beef fried rice, chicken and egg noodles (basically chicken lo mein), curry vegetables and sweet and sour chicken balls through a third party online service called Tasteaway. Yes, very Canadian! The order came fairly quickly. The website had given a 55 minute wait for delivery, but the food came within 40 minutes. We were starving at that time, so we dug in right away.

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="16249" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/oriental-taste-canadianized-chinese-food-delivery/fortunecookie/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?fit=540%2C384&ssl=1" data-orig-size="540,384" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.4","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1367777977","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.13","iso":"160","shutter_speed":"0.05","title":""}" data-image-title="fortunecookie" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?fit=300%2C213&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?fit=540%2C384&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-16249" alt="fortunecookie" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?resize=540%2C384" width="540" height="384" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?w=540&ssl=1 540w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?resize=150%2C106&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?resize=300%2C213&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/fortunecookie.jpg?resize=65%2C45&ssl=1 65w" sizes="(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

I can’t say that the food was spectacular. This is Chinese delivery, not Lai Wah Heen or Dynasty. It isn’t even your standard Markham or Agincourt Chinese joint. However, it is much better than the typical junk one gets at the mall food court. However, I have to say that there were real flaws. The chicken balls, for example, which were perhaps slightly bigger than a golf ball, was mostly batter, while the fried rice and egg noodles were both low in their respective meat departments as well. In addition, I’m used to fried rice with eggs, while it was definitely lacking in our beef fried rice (I’ve found that eggs are often NOT used for fried rice at the less authentic restaurants). The lo mein wasn’t mixed enough – there were layers of mostly noodles and then the chicken was mostly in the bottom (“lo” means “mixed” or “tossed” in Cantonese). The curried mixed vegetables were good – if you’re someone who likes things moderately to extremely spicy (i.e. not us).

Would I recommend this place? Sure, if you’re looking for some comfort, unexotic, inauthentic Chinese food. A set meal for two is around $25 while a la carte can run you up to $40-something. And yes, the delivery did come with fortune cookies.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">16242</post-id>
