I am encouraging everyone to share images of them on Instagram wearing pieces by Canadian designers and using the hashtag #isupportcanadianfashion. More details here!

It was announced today that Toronto’s semi-annual fashion extravaganza will not occur this October as IMG, the group which operated the event has decided to end its contract. This is due to the lack of support. I am honestly not that surprised – especially after the last event. Some of the event’s regulars, including Pink Tartan, did not even show their Fall 2016 collection. While I quite enjoyed Fashion Week in the past, said event just seemed a bit…lacking. I had a feeling there were problems.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="19839" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/matiere-noire-and-malorie-urbanovitch/sony-dsc-162/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?fit=580%2C405&ssl=1" data-orig-size="580,405" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4","credit":"","camera":"SLT-A55V","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1395170679","copyright":"","focal_length":"55","iso":"1600","shutter_speed":"0.001","title":"SONY DSC"}" data-image-title="SONY DSC" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?fit=300%2C209&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?fit=580%2C405&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone wp-image-19839" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?resize=540%2C377" alt="Toronto Fashion Week" width="540" height="377" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?w=580&ssl=1 580w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?resize=150%2C104&ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?resize=300%2C209&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Malorie-Urbanovitch-SLIDER.jpg?resize=65%2C45&ssl=1 65w" sizes="(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

Final walk from Malorie Urbanovich Fall/Winter 2014 show

However, I am a bit sad. While other cities in this country still have their fashion weeks – Vancouver, for example, not having one here just makes us seem a bit less…”grand.” Maybe even dock us a few points in terms of being a “major” city. And what of the designers? I am a supporter of Canadian fashion, and the lack of a fashion week in this city makes it a bit more difficult for them to promote and market. While it’s possible to hold independent shows, it will be more difficult for them to show to the public unless people are on mailing lists or follow them on social media. Not everyone subscribes. And what about new designers? I was introduced to many AT fashion week.

I suppose there is some hope in this. Maybe. The article did say that they were hoping another group will “stage a fashion showcase in Toronto.” Let’s hope that this will indeed happen. I wish crowd funding could help it, but I really doubt we’d ever get enough.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">25293</post-id>

World MasterCard Fashion Week: October 19-23

Cynthia Cheng Mintz

Fashion and Style

Toronto Fashion Week

Canada

Canadian designers

Fashion Week

Spring-Summer 2016

Style

Wear Canada

World Mastercard Fashion Week

Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week starts next Monday, October 19. Rachel Sin, for one. She was last seen on the runway last year, presenting both her fall 2014 and spring 2015 collections. Her Spring/Summer 2016 collection is called #staygold. Other possibly interesting shows include a Star Wars-themed presentation in addition to finalists for the Mercedes-Benz StartUp competition. Big name regulars participating include Pink Tartan, Narces, Mikael D (who, as usual, will be showing on the final day) and Mackage. Lucian Matis will also be presenting this year. What is missing from this season’s shows is Fashion Saturday, which took place at both the Spring/Summer 2014 and 2015 seasons. It highlighted the best of the week and also included a marketplace featuring many Canadian designers. Perhaps it will be back in March for the fall shows.

Will YOU be attending the shows? Who are YOU most looking forward to seeing? The brand’s philosophy of clothing that “loves you back” was definitely seen in the Fall/Winter 2013 collection. Targeting young women in their 20s and early 30s, the pieces are made with materials such as merino, distressed leather and vintage fur, in neutral hues of dark brown and cream, with bits of colour throughout. The looks are casual for the most part, though some can be dressed up for a work environment that is not too formal. The winter shorts trend continues in this collection as do skinny pants with long tops. A definite favourite is a fur hoodie wrap/lion’s mane worn with a plain white t-shirt and skinny pants.

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="15341" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/moosebeaver-makes-its-debut/mooseandbeavercoat/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" data-orig-size="333,500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="mooseandbeavercoat" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?fit=199%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone wp-image-15341" alt="mooseandbeavercoat" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?resize=266%2C400" width="266" height="400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?w=333&ssl=1 333w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?resize=99%2C150&ssl=1 99w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?resize=199%2C300&ssl=1 199w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeavercoat.jpg?resize=150%2C225&ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px" data-recalc-dims="1" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="15348" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/moosebeaver-makes-its-debut/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" data-orig-size="333,500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="mooseandbeaverlionsmane2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?fit=199%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone wp-image-15348" alt="mooseandbeaverlionsmane2" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?resize=266%2C400" width="266" height="400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?w=333&ssl=1 333w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?resize=99%2C150&ssl=1 99w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?resize=199%2C300&ssl=1 199w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverlionsmane2.jpg?resize=150%2C225&ssl=1 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px" data-recalc-dims="1" />
What’s good about this collection is that one doesn’t have to have a particular shape to wear it – there is definitely something for everyone. All too often, designers only create art which works well only on long, lean bodies (think about it: this would exclude many Hollywood and music types, too). While there are good points about the line, the focus on dark browns, neutrals and blue, while allowing us to focus on the designs, was still a little bit plain – it would have been nice to see a something other than cobalt! At least it wasn’t all black and white.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="15342" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/moosebeaver-makes-its-debut/mooseandbeaverdress/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" data-orig-size="333,500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="mooseandbeaverdress" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?fit=199%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone wp-image-15342" alt="mooseandbeaverdress" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?resize=266%2C400" width="266" height="400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?w=333&ssl=1 333w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?resize=99%2C150&ssl=1 99w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?resize=199%2C300&ssl=1 199w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/mooseandbeaverdress.jpg?resize=150%2C225&ssl=1 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px" data-recalc-dims="1" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="15343" data-permalink="https://www.delectablychic.com/moosebeaver-makes-its-debut/cowl-top-and-skirt/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" data-orig-size="333,500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="cowl top and skirt" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?fit=199%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?fit=333%2C500&ssl=1" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone wp-image-15343" alt="cowl top and skirt" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?resize=266%2C400" width="266" height="400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?w=333&ssl=1 333w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?resize=99%2C150&ssl=1 99w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?resize=199%2C300&ssl=1 199w, https://i0.wp.com/www.delectablychic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cowl-top-and-skirt.jpg?resize=150%2C225&ssl=1 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px" data-recalc-dims="1" />
The price point for Moose&Beaver ranges between $250 and $1,000 Canadian.

Photography by: Raymond Chow/Canada Wears

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">15315</post-id>
