TFI New Labels Crowns ‘Specialty’ Line AliceAzur Winner

The 2014 Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) New Labels was held at One King West Monday night, featuring presentations of designs by four finalists.  The winner of the contest was Miriam Baker’s AliceAzur, a brand that, according to the program, “specializes in fitting women with a D cup+ bust.”  This is interesting to note as I believe 2014 is the first year TFI has awarded a more “specialized” line.  While it is still not “plus size,” it’s good progress.  I’m not holding my breath for a full plus or petite line just yet, though.  I don’t think the fashion world is ready – especially for petite.  But anyway…

AliceAzur was gorgeously styled.  The collection was mostly black/dark-coloured, but styled with pretty jewellery courtesy of H&M and gloves from Farley Chatto.  The very lady-like looks can definitely be dressed up or down, and were without crazy patterns or designs that could be difficult to mix and match with a woman’s existing wardrobe.  A good thing, considering that many of us are trying to pare down our closets.  The very fact that the collection is extremely elegant shows that fashion can be worn by a wider age range.  AliceAzur can be worn by girls of 15 or 16 or by women in their seventies or more!  One dress can be shared not just by mother and daughter, but grandmother, mother and daughter!  Just not to the same event, styled the same way (haha).

The other New Labels finalists were swimwear line Nomad of the Sun, Laura Siegel and Christopher Paunil, whose collection was entirely made up of little black dresses.  During the judging, attendees were entertained by Juno award winner, Vita Chambers.  As winner, Miriam Baker receives $25,000 to go towards her line as well as an exclusive editorial with FLARE magazine and the production of a look book for the collection with beauty products provided by CoverGirl Cosmetics and Pantene.
