While fashion in New York may be all about Spring 2014, Toronto is in high gear for the upcoming awards season for film. From September 5 to 15, many of the film industry’s elite, including actors, directors, producers and more will be in the city promoting their projects at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which can be seen in various venues across the city. Though most of it has largely moved down to the TIFF Lightbox area on King and University, some activity can still be seen in Yorkville – which had, for a long time, been the centre of it all. Nonetheless, some of this year’s highlights include:
Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom
As a biopic of a well-loved and important historical figure, this one has AWARD written all over it. Of course, in order to actually WIN, it has to prove itself. An earlier biopic of Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife, Winnie Mandela, which starred Jennifer Hudson (of all people) in the lead, did not do that well.
The Stag
An Irish comedy about a bachelor party weekend in the country and anything that can possibly go wrong. It has the requisite nudity, crazy dude who doesn’t believe in using a GPS or compass and more. So will they make it back home and ready for the wedding?
Ilo Ilo:
About the relationship between a troubled young boy, his family and their maid/nanny, set in Singapore in the late 90s, during the Asian financial crisis.
Of course, these are just three of many, many films that will be showing at TIFF this year.
