VAWK Makes Triumphant Return to Fashion Week

After being absent for a couple of seasons, Sunny Fong made a return to World MasterCard Fashion Week Tuesday evening with not just one collection, but also a small capsule collection in collaboration with Subway.  Yes, sandwich-inspired dresses, including two pieces that looked like lettuce.  While that was mostly wearable art, his main collection was more consumer friendly but definitely with a Sunny Twist of being a bit more artistic.

There was quite a bit of black for the first few pieces – based on my experience at Fashion Week for the past several seasons (I have been attending since 2009), designers like to present their pieces in colour groups (and while it looks orderly, it makes it difficult for media who are taking notes as they are unsure of the palate.  Oh well) – but colours soon showed.  In fact, the palate isn’t even all that fall-inspired at all.  While yes, there was certainly camel, the main colour was pink with a hint of blue.  More spring/summer than fall.  This is a welcome change and shows that the designer thinks out of the box rather than sticking with the deep hues.  Many of the pieces have detailing, but are not over-the-top.

Three pieces from the Fall/Winter 2015 collection (looks more spring, no?)

The cuts seen in this collection were quite welcoming to many types of figures.  Some of the pieces, which looked quite short on the models (I felt that some of the models needed to wear leggings because the dresses looked more like tunics on them), would be perfect for shorter woman – even office appropriate as a dress.  Many of the other pieces are what I call “alterations friendly,” with few that are not “alterable.”  Very good news and something that many designers need to learn from.  I hope to see VAWK back for the Spring/Summer collections in October.
