Weekend Basics for Winter: Long Sweaters, Skinny Pants and Tall Boots

Though Toronto doesn’t necessarily get all that snowy in the winter, thanks to below freezing or borderline freezing temperatures, snow the ground is often extremely wet.  And as a frequent walker and transit-taker, even during the weekend, a wet walkway, especially when there are snowbanks, can dirty the hems of pants.  Thus, for me, anyway, the basic casual winter wardrobe is not complete without skinny pants (skinny jeans, jeggings, peggings, etc…) and tall boots to wear over them.  This is always accompanied by a longer or loose fitting top, often a sweater.  After all, skinny pants should always be balanced out by something longer or looser-fit.  One doesn’t want to look like they’re auditioning for Rizzo in Grease!, after all.  If it is a cardigan or low-cut sweater, then some sort of layering piece is always worn underneath.  It’s sometimes a blouse, sometimes a camisole.

This is a kind of look that would work very well for weekend shopping or just hanging out with friends.  It isn’t sloppy, is casual, and most of all, comfortable.  The boots should not only snow-friendly (i.e. no spiky heels), but warm – Cole Haan makes some excellent ones, as does Stuart Weitzman.  Flats are, of course, ideal, but if you’re petite like me, a wedge isn’t bad either.  And don’t forget to add a coat, mittens or gloves and a hat to stay warm!

What are your thoughts?  What is your basic winter look?
