WMCFW Wrap-up: Yays, Nays and Mehs: Fall/Winter 2014 Edition

Now that Fashion Week is over for another season, it’s time to wrap things up.  As usual, I am presenting my likes, dislikes and neutrals (aka Yays, Nays and Mehs).  I covered mostly early shows this season, so unfortunately, I missed designers like David Dixon and Maison Matthew Gallagher.  Perhaps next season!

The Yays:

Triarchy and Anu Raina:

Triarchy’s equestrian look for F/W 2014

You saw our posts, you know we loved them, especially Triarchy’s equestrian looks (it would be nice if they made petite/cropped lengths, however).  Other favourite designers include Hilary MacMillan and Laura Siegel, both with refreshing, young, yet sophisticated designs.

Gourmet B1tches Food Truck:

Okay, so I wasn’t there this time, but from what I heard, it was delicious!  I promise that I’ll be around in October, so can they come back then (if I don’t catch them before.  Now that foodtruck laws are apparently less strict, I hope to see them around)?

Press and Buyers’ Brunch:

Some lovely bags at the Press and Buyers’ Brunch

We will have a full post on some of our discoveries later this week or next week, but once again, the Toronto Fashion Incubator did an amazing job.  We discovered many new brands, including a two coat lines, bags (very lightweight and desk-to-dinner appropriate), accessories and clothing.  The food was fairly standard (though I have to say that one can never say no to pancakes with maple syrup, chocolate sauce and whipped cream), but hey, we’re there for the designers.

Nays:

The runway space on Days 1 and 2:

Can I say how COLD it was, especially in the photographers’ pit?  We might as well have been outside.  Luckily, things warmed up later this week, so it likely was just a first day glitch.  But it was still nasty.

Media seating:

I opted to sit in the audience rather than shoot from the pit on Days 4 and 5 so I can concentrate on taking notes on the looks, rather than trying to get the best shots.  However, despite being a veteran Fashion Week attendee (started covering in 2009), I’m regulated to general, nameless media seating, while some bloggers who’ve been around for a shorter period get named seats.  I like posting about a selected show by the next day, and since general media seats tend not to receive press material, I have to rely on my imagination to write, rather than using the press/background information as reference.  Contacting PR isn’t an option in this case as it will take too long.

Shoes at Certain Shows:

Black, flat platform wedges are ugly.  ‘Nuff said.

Mehs:

Food prices:

Menu

Yes, I will rant about it every season.  $9 for a panini without salad is a bit expensive, in my opinion, but then again, it’s the Ritz-Carlton.  Still, I would have preferred that the price be closer to $7 or 8 – especially for the two vegetarian options.  At least the $3 teas are not that bad.  Starbucks charges a similar price for talls and grandes.

Madame Moje:

Madame Moje: Lovely collection, but just too much peplum

I have to say that I loved the more sophisticated, grown-up looks and bold colours.  However, there was a bit too much peplum.  If the collection only had one, maybe two looks, then Madame Moje would be in my “Yay” column.  Of course, it wouldn’t stop me from making any purchases (of the non-peplum pieces.  I actually have a few in mind!).
