Women, Make-Up and Relationships

According to a UK study (and post on Styleite), more than half of all women (57%) in the UK would rather dump their boyfriends than go out in public without make-up.  Really?  Do women really dislike their looks THAT MUCH that they can’t show their faces in public without wearing anything?

57% of women would rather break up with their boyfriends than go without make-up!

I realize that there are women out there who were taught to look put together whenever they were out in public.  And yes, I agree that one should, unless they’re just stepping out to go to the gym or grocery store.   I also know that this could be generational – there was a time when women (and men, too) just weren’t seen in public wearing say, track pants and a t-shirt.  In fact, I recall speaking with a woman who graduated from my high school in the 1920s.  She said that growing up, she was never seen in public without her hat and gloves.  But that was then.  Today, we can get away with looking less formal and still be considered “put together.” But I still don’t get why make-up so many women hoard their products (this same study said that women have, on average, 54 products in their drawer).  As I said in an earlier post, I keep my kit quite simple.  But the whole idea that a woman would rather end a relationship than not wear any make-up is just absurd.

I’d really love to ask the 57% whether they wear make-up to the gym or supermarket.  Especially to the gym.  Why would someone do that?  Don’t they find it gross?  Or do they consider wearing just a smidge of lip balm, “wearing make-up”?  Does make-up really make someone feel THAT MUCH better about themselves?   And are these the same women who get up before their boyfriends/husbands to “put on their face”?  I didn’t think people did that anymore – even older women who grew up believing that they had to look impeccable.  I mean, people really don’t care.  Besides, why is a product that would only help one look better until it gets rubbed or washed off be BETTER than a real, live person?  That’s just plain insulting.  I’m wondering how the BOYFRIENDS feel upon hearing this.  They CAN’T be happy.

I’m not advocating that one give up wearing make-up, period.  That would be silly, coming from a lifestyle site.  However, I think the 57% should really think about WHY they don’t want to be bare faced.
